       Former NYPD Police Commissioner Voorhis Speaks

       It ain't often that you get to hear a guy who was born before
       Carrie Brown and who
       was the Police Commissioner when the old gal was alive......but
       here he is!
       Born in 1829, died in 1932.
       This 1929 interview features John R. Voorhis, who was at the
       time 99 years old, and born 100 years earlier in 1829.
       Mr. Voorhis was a Political leader in Tammany Hall. He was
       raised in NYC, and initially had a career as a foreman. In 1873,
       he was appointed one of NYC’s Excise Commissioners, and later
       served multiple terms as a Police Commissioner and Police
       Justice. He also held roles as Commissioner of the Department of
       Docks.
       In the early 1900s he also served as Chairman of New York City’s
       board of elections and as NY State’s Superintendent of Elections
       . A long-time Tammany Hall member, he was honored with multiple
       titles and awards. Mr. Voorhis passed away in February 1932 at
       the age of 102.
       This interview captures a fascinating first hand account of how
       New York City developed over the years from someone who lived
       through the 19th century and was born before the Civil War and
       even before the Victorian Era.
