A likely explanation seems to be she helped take care of his two
girls, after Carrie Brown had left for New York?
Pete....the girls aren't listed in the 1870 census for Peter and
Hannah Lassen....so they weren't with them.
Neither are they listed with any of the Liebschs in Salem.
She was only 4 years older than Mary Ellen.
Maybe the $1,000 was a gift.

Yes, you’re right.
The question remains though, why her? In 1870, she was 20.

Pete:
What do you make of the fact that Charles referred to Peter
Lassen as his friend.....not Uncle....on the will?

I confess that I hadn’t noticed it. Well spotted.
I think my initial thought is that he used ‘friend’ to signify
their close relationship.
So I don’t think it necessarily implies that Lassen was not his
uncle - but of course it’s made me try to recollect where that
info comes from. How do we know Lassen was his uncle, I forget.
So I think I still think that Lassen was his uncle, but
rechecking why I think so might not hurt :)

It’s mentioned in several newspaper articles that Lassen was
Brown’s uncle, and also mentioned by Lassen’s descendant Gary
Thomas.
I don’t think the use of ‘friend’ rather than ‘uncle’ is enough
to convince me otherwise.
Still would be nice to know the exact family relation - as
stated, if Lassen was his uncle, Brown’s mother must have been
Lassen’s (elder) sister.
If Nina has found Lassen’s birth (previously said to be 1811,
new source 1812?) and confirmation (1826) perhaps similar can be
found for his sisters. That would id Brown’s mother.

Pete....for what it's worth, I'm with you on Peter Lassen being
his Uncle.
I spent some time today looking for an article that mentioned
the two men as merely friends to no avail.
I'm also convinced that the original New York City dispatch that
a Capt. Lawson paid Carrie's bills was
amended at the same time as the relationship between the two men
was also corrected. Lassen didn't support
her at all.
One item that it appears to have never been corrected is that
she was left $1.00 in Charles' will.

Not only do I have the name of his great-great-grandmother, but
i also know more precisely where Brown's death took place (I
only had 'West African coast') off the coast of Zanzibar.
Charles Brown died off the west coast of Africa, not Zanzibar,
which is on the east coast.
