Drug misuse would refer to the accidental misuse of a drug or
prescription. This would be similar, but not limited to taking
the wrong amount of a medication or taking a medication to close
together in time. This could also refer to taking the wrong type
of over the counter medication for a specific issue. Drug use
would refer more simply to the actual use of a drug. Drugs are
used to help you feel better, escape reality or just for
immediate gratification. Sometimes drug use is just something
people do for experimentation, or out of curiosity. The issue or
risk of drug use is that it can lead very quickly to drug abuse.
The person is trying to get that same feeling they got when
they first started to use. Drug abuse would be something that
would pose a bigger problem or an addiction. A problem could be
personal, financial, emotional or even medical. There are a lot
of negative things that are linked to Drug abuse. There is a
line that is crossed where the person is no longer just
experimenting or escaping, they are now addicted, and the
addiction is in control of them. Negative risk factors could
help determine if an individual would be more likely to have an
issue with drug abuse.

Drugs can be a quick fix for many. People use drugs for many
different reasons such as experimenting/curiosity, during social
interactions, peer pressure, numb their reality, or just to feel
better. Drug misuse would refer to the unintentional use of
prescribed or over-the-counter drugs. An example would be taking
too much of something, taking it with another drug, or the wrong
one. The use of a drug could lead to drug abuse. Protective and
risk factors can also play a role in whether one is more or less
likely to abuse a drug. Risk factors could be lack of parental
supervision, lack of social skills, or parental use of drugs.
Protective factors could be parental monitoring and support,
positive relationships, or parents reinforcing nonuse of drugs.
Drug abuse is the inappropriate and intentional use of a drug
that can lead to one having physical, emotional, financial,
social, and medical consequences. Drug abuse becomes a pattern
and interferes with a person's everyday life and can have many
negative consequences with it.

From the text: Drug abuse is the intentional and inappropriate
use of a drug resulting in physical, emotional, financial,
social, or intellectual consequences. Harm used from using drugs
would be drug abuse.
A person who cannot afford their prescription drugs and takes ½
of it at a time to stretch it out is misusing the drug, but not
abusing the drug.
Substances used “appropriately” is simply drug use. Prescription
drugs used as directed, or even a psychoactive drug used during
a culturally specific religious ceremony, would not be
considered drug “abuse,” it would be simply “use.”

A person with a mental health diagnosis taking the prescription
drugs from their doctor as prescribed would be use and not
abuse. A person unconventionally using those same drugs without
the doctor’s knowledge, could be considered misuse or abuse if
the drug use causes harm.
Even caffeine can be abused. Our society considers caffeine use
socially acceptable and many people enjoy a cup of coffee in the
morning. However, one can consume so much caffeine that they
become jittery. One can also develop a tolerance and withdrawal
of caffeine. At this point, the person is addicted to caffeine,
though society doesn’t have any punishments or strong feelings
about caffeine addict. Their physician might.
Some, usually young people, may use recreational drugs as a way
to rebel. If, while using these drugs, the person does something
that could harm themselves or others, this is abuse. For
example, they could use enough substance to give themselves a
heart attack or drive recklessly.

Dez,
I like how you say it might just be an prescription accident and
therefore misuse.
I also like the term "quick-fix."

Good points made- a question I have about your response is the
comment "negative risk factors"- how would you define a risk
factor as negative?

Drug use could be defined as the consumption of a substance into
the body in order to produce a desired effect. Drugs can be
used for various reasons but for this discussion as it relates
to SUD, drugs are often used to escape reality, relieve physical
or psychological pain, to numb, etc. When a drug is used for
purposes outside it's therapeutic dose, used more than
prescribed or intended, or for reasons other than its original
intention it can be considered misuse. Misuse can be
intentional or unintentional. When misuse is intentional it is
considered abuse of a drug. Addiction can happen when drugs are
misused either intentionally or unintentionally. Addiction
happens when a person can not physically and/or psychologically
can't get by without the drug.

Drug use alters functions emotionally,
physically, financially, and socially, whether we are misusing a
drug or abusing a drug. Drug misuse is considered
unintentionally misusing. Inappropiate dosing of prescribed or
OTC drugs. Drug abuse is intentionally and inappropiate use
resulting in negative physical and life consequences for the
user.
