Employability

Now that you've completed your work experience placement and
nearly finished your studies in the Career Pilot class, this is
a chance to reflect on one of the central ideas that we've
talked about; employability.
Write a 100-150 word response to the questions below and make
sure you comment on or ask questions about your classmates
posts.
1. Which employability skills did you use the most while on your
work experience placement? Give specific examples to illustrate.
2. Which employability skills do you feel you are naturally most
confident and capable with? Explain why.
3. Do you think all of the employability skills can be
taught/learned? Explain your answer.

mera care aged care facility (esther)
while on work experience I noticed that the most commonly used
employability skill is communication and teamwork, they all had
to communicate about everything they did because if they didn't
it would usually have a bad affect on a client, for example when
one of the carers forgot to tell the other carers that she was
going out with a resident to play pool with him there was a
whole trolley full of food that was left for 40 minutes when it
was supposed to be given out to the other residents so they
could eat. I think I am fairly confident in most of the
employability skills, but I feel that I'm most confident with
the problem solving skills and the communication skill. mainly
just think I was brought up in a way that we have to always be
thinking critically and be able to handle difficult situations
the best way we can. I think that most of these skills are the
kind people are born with, and strengthen through out their
life, but I think that they can be taught as well. like the
technology one.

I used a few employability skills during my time at Scotsburn.
Communication and Teamwork were the major skills, but I also
used Problem Solving and Learning. Communication is a big thing
in the workplace, knowing where to put the plants and it also
links in with Teamwork, helping each other put the plants down
and put plants in pots productively. Problem Solving was used as
I had sore feet and had to tackle the pain and Learning as I
learnt a lot of the type of workplace it was. Communication and
Teamwork are skills I'm more confident and capable with
naturally because I like being friendly and helping people. Yes,
they can be learnt through hard work and teamwork through the
stages of learning.

Thanks Esther, it's nice to see that you have good skills and
are comfortable in them. Work Experience seemed really fun!!!!

Yes Esther, I can imagine good communication is critical in an
aged care facility! And any break downs in communication can
have some serious effects. You have to communicate not just with
other staff but the residents as well, which requires
flexibility and adaptability. It's good that you observed the
communication problem while on work experience - a clear
reminder of why it's so important! And I think I agree with your
last point - some of these skills seem inherent (we're born with
them or we're not) - but some can definitely be learned and/or
improved upon. Being conscious of your own strengths and
weaknesses is crucial.

Thanks Ayoub. Yes it sounds like communication and teamwork are
very important in a nursery setting. Also I think learning is a
big part of any new job - good on you for trying something
pretty new. Like I said to Esther knowing your own strengths and
weaknesses in regards to employability can help you focus on the
areas you need to improve. It's very helpful that teamwork and
communication come naturally to to you because they're very
important in nearly every workplace!

The skills I had to use for my work placement is team work when
I had to help with events or walk around the streets,
enthusiastic with the bubbly personality/excited to see
everyone. Enthusiastic is natural to me because I have a bubbly
personality and team work I work well with people a lot doing
things with the other employees/employers in different ways.
I do think that skills can be learned/taught if people just
practice and or have been shown, but I also believe that it can
come naturally with how people have been brought up, with how
people look at what people around are doing and pick up things
easily from family etc.

Yes I think your enthusiasm would have been great at FNCC.
Having the ability to talk to all types of people and make them
feel welcome and happy to be there is a huge advantage when
working in community services or in community development. And
teamwork is critical in a workplace like FNCC because so much is
going on all the time and no doubt every day brings unexpected
situations for the staff and volunteers - so working as a team I
think is definitely very important.

esther and newbie im glad that the teamwork and communication
and meeting friendly people its a great feeling and builds up
more confidence up
