France, the United Kingdom and Italy pushed to intervene, while
Germany refused to participate. The United States , despite
initially assuming command, warned that the bulk of the
operations should fall on European countries. He warned that
Libya was not a priority issue for the White House and withdrew
to the background, leaving European countries to assume the
       greatest burden of the operation.
As in Georgia, another conflict in the ex-Soviet territory broke

again in Ukraine in October 2014, in
the Euromaidan revolt or revolution, whose purpose was to
overthrow the government of Viktor Yanukovych, of pro-Russian
orientation but elected at the polls. . It was a revolution
carried out by those in favor of joining the EU and NATO .and
move away from the tutelage of Russia. But that revolution
unleashed the revolt in the provinces of Donetsk and Lugansk in
the Donbass, and the Crimean peninsula, territories with a
       population of majority Russian origin.

The first two received military support from Russia, and Crimea
was occupied by Russian forces and eventually annexed. It is
true that the annexation was contrary to international law, but
it must be remembered that, in 1954, Nikita Khrushchev had
decided to "gift" Crimea to Ukraine, without thinking that one
day the USSRcould collapse and disintegrate and that Ukraine
would become an independent republic. On the Crimean peninsula,
in the port of Sevastopol, Russia has its Navy anchored and from
there it has access to the Mediterranean. Given the vital
strategic importance of the territory, it would be naive to
think that Russia would abandon it.
