Excerpts from Lars Klingbeil's speech on the changing times
delivered on June 21, 2022 at the Conference in the Tiergarten,
Berlin. The definition of crisis given by the Italian writer and
intellectual Antonio Gramsci is famous. In a crisis – he says –
the old is no longer there, while the new has not yet begun.
Today we live in a time of multiple crises: war, climate,
pandemic, inflation, social division. Each crisis is in itself
an enormous challenge for our society.
But currently the crises are occurring together, interrelated

reinforcing. February 24, 2022, the start
date of the Russian war offensive against Ukraine, marked a
before and after for the European peace order, a "change of
era." We have an enormous organizational task ahead of us. We

Russian President Vladimir Putin started this war. He is
responsible for brutal murders and the suffering of Ukrainians.
It is his attack on the sovereignty of a European country. We
are not to blame for Putin's war, but we must ask ourselves as a
self-criticism what we could have done differently before
February 24. And we must, above all, think about what we should
do better in the future. After the genocide of European Jews and
the two world wars started by the German Reich, we were
reincorporated into the international family of States.
