       Robust print materials that can be sterilised

       I often make ancillary bits of equipment for culturing cells but
       the main parts generally have to be machined out of something
       tough enough (poly carbonate/ polysulphone£££) to be sterilised
       in some fashion - typically in an autoclave (121 C steam) or
       gamma sterilised at a push, I was just wondering if anyone has
       used any of the "tough" resins that are available (such as
       Formlabs high temp / tough resin) and does it still print at a
       high enough resolution?

       This would definitely be worth trying with the Formlabs dental
       resin. I'm currently away but do get in touch with Geoff in CUH
       Media Studio, or Danny Marsden in Clinical Engineering.

       I think there are two possibilities. From the Formlabs website:
       "Formlabs High Temp Resin has a heat deflection temperature
       (HDT) of 289 °C @ 0.45 MPa—the highest on the 3D printing
       materials market. Use it to print models for environmental
       testing, or create molds and masters for production processes
       like casting and thermoforming."
       Their Dental SG Resin is: "An autoclavable, Class 1
       biocompatible resin, Dental SG is designed for printing precise
       surgical guides and similar devices."
       I would try the Dental SG first - we could try a small sample
       for you.

       Hi Dan from engineering here,
       Are the units you have made for you or purchased from a supplier
       for the job?
       From the resin and 3d printing side of it, the dental resin is
       designed to be sterilised in an autoclave but I have never tried
       multiple cycles and don't think it would last long under those
       conditions. Also the resins can be brittle and easily shatter.
       That is what the tough resin tries to overcome, though I haven't
       tried autoclaving it I don't think it would be up to the job.
       The high temp might work (we don't have any to hand) though
       again they all come with drawbacks, id have to have a look at
       the datasheet for high temp resin.
       Ideally, you would use the dental resin to prototype shape and
       form. Then find an alternative manufacturer to make them out of
       traditional plastics, either by machining, injection moulding or
       another method.
       Ill bring along a sample print we have of the dental resin to
       the meeting tomorrow so we can have a chat.
