Picking off counties
By: tarmacjohn Date: February 8, 2014, 10:16 am

I am travelling up to Gateshead next month so am planning on
taking the opportunity to find a cache in all the counties up
the right hand side of the country.
I might be missing something obvious but is there an easy way to
see what caches are in which counties?

When we've done it we down load caches along a route as a PQ and
dumped that onto Memory Map. To claim a county we always pick a
cache that is well to the required side of the County boundary.
Probably the easiest way is to go for LQ caches but it may need
detours though.
Hope that helps a little.

Now which map do you use:
[li]GSAK - which doesn't have for example Rutland in it[/li]
[li]My Geocaching Profile
HTML http://www.mygeocachingprofile.com/
- now this seems about
right[/li]
[li]Memory Map[/li]
[li]Or some thing else[/li]
I'm going for at least 10 finds per County, my list of Counties
HTML http://www.mygeocachingprofile.com/userstatistics/w/walktall/walktall.UKIrelandCountyList.jpg?random=2831,<br
/>so my outstanding ones left are:
Cambridgeshire - 4 finds
Rutland - 4
Grampian - 7
Highland - 6
Orkney - 0
Shetland Islands - 0
Western Isles - 0
Then there's Northern Ireland
Antrim - 4
Londonderry - 1
Armagh - 0
Down - 0
Fermanach - 0
Tyrone - 0
And don't forget Isle of Man - 0
Talking of Isle of Man, you can get a flight from Gloucester to
IOM

/>I've thought about popping over there for a day or better stil

over night

But TJ, to answer your question, I've used Memory Map to make
sure I'm within the County of interest and created a PQ to cover
the area I wanted.

So no way of projecting caches onto a map with clear county
boundaries. As Memory Map is really that clear is it

I use GSAK and caches along a route macro.
Gets me caches close to the roads, so easier to grab a quick
cache.
GSAK database always gets a check with the update counties
macro, amazing how many cachers don't know which county or
caching region their cache is in!
(Amazes me that something that is based on 'Location' that
people manage get it wrong! And that's not just because the
cache is near to a county border. ::) )
One problem I have with any stats not generated by GSAK, is the
fact I've found a few YOSM's. At least in GSAK I can lock them
to the correct coordinates/county.
I have the LQ's as a PQ and loaded on the sat-nav, however LQ's
can be up to a mile from the road... Certainly not a cache and
dash!

Geocacher Amberel has written a webpage for smartphone users:
HTML http://www.amberel.com/county.htm
When you are out and about and unsure of which county you are in
this handy webpage can identify it for you using your phones
gps, or you can manually input the co-ords.
I believe he is using the 1974 county boundaries.

I see Rutland isn't included, so wouldn't use it myself but
looks like a good app

Not sure what you mean above!
If you want to do the cache on a route PQ and email it to me I
can dump it onto MM and let you know which cache is in which
county if that helps.

Thanks for the offer, I am OK doing it myself.
I think I am after something that doesn't exist. I was hoping to
find a map like
HTML http://www.picturesofengland.com/mapofengland/counties-map.html
HTML http://www.picturesofengland.com/mapofengland/counties-map.html<br
/>but with roads on that I could load my PQ into.
As I said, I don't think it exists but thought I would ask.
