Welcome ;D
This is a Geocaching forum, for people who prefer to walk to
(geo)caches more than others. But obviously you don't know what
a Geocache is :o
GEOCACHING
HTML http://www.geocaching.com
is a real-world outdoor treasure
hunting game. Players try to locate hidden containers, called
geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then share their
experiences online. Geocachers hide a container in a real life
location, and other Geocachers go out to find them - caches come
in all sorts of shapes and sizes - they can be deviously hidden
(eg a fake rock, with a compartment) or large, plastic
containers, which tend to be filled with goodies - usually small
toys, books, DVDs etc - so the game (some call it a sport) is
popular with families. However, everyone Geocaches - Children,
Students, Adults, married couples, families and retired
folk/couples - over 5 million people world wide take part in
Geocaching!! And there are nearly 2 million active (not gone
missing) Geocaches hidden all around the world - there's
probably at least one within a mile from your house!! :)
Unfortunately, as Geocaching evolved (the first was hidden May
3rd 2000) people started hiding caches along busy roads, so
people could just pop in the car, and drive and stop for every
cache - we don't mind that, but our forum is for people who
prefer the walking/hiking/adventure to each individual Geocache.
The best thing about Geocaching, is that they take you to
beautiful places you'd never have gone to before - secret
places, right on your doorstep - most (other than the drive-by
geocaches) are hidden in stunning locations, with glorious views
or an aspect of history to the area. They can be hidden alone,
or in a group, on a circular walk. For example, you could go
Geocaching for a whole day - choose a 7 mile or so walk, and
there may be 20 Geocaches along it - or more, or less.
It really is a great hobby, and it's not surprising that 5
million people take part, and there are even Geocaching podcasts
( visit link
HTML http://www.podcacher.com
) and Geocaching gatherings, called
event caches. If you want to know more, go to the Geocaching
website Geocaching.com
HTML http://www.geocaching.com
, though there are others. And us
Geocachers have found 1000s of Geocaches. One of our members
recently found their 10,000th Geocache. But, they do say "It's
not about the numbers - it's about the experience, and
discovering new places"
