       Who's Scanning?

Guess I'll go first, EllisDon is scanning and processing point
cloud data and has been doing so for years now. Really hope
there are other like-minded companies out there.

We don't scan ourselves currently, but we have used it on a
couple projects for different reasons. One was to coordinate a
complex geometric entrance to a building. The steel was scanned
and then modeled in its exact position. We then used that model
to build up the architectural portion to help the fabricators.
We have also had mechanical rooms scanned to inform us of the
as-built condition. Scanning is much more accurate than
measuring by hand, and you don't miss anything. You can always
open the data and tour the site virtually, which is very
       beneficial.

       Hi
       Thanks for starting this thread.
We focus on developing Asset Information Models (as-built BIM
data) here in Switzerland (BIM Facility AG). We use laser
scanning as well as drones and other surveying methodologies.
I've personally been working with laser scanning and developing
workflows for building graphical data from point clouds since
2001. I've worked in UK and Switzerland. It would be interesting
to share some workflow ideas for scan to BIM. Are you using
laser scanning for capturing Survey Information of existing
assets and are you also using it for BIM 2 Field applications
(or capturing the as-built geometry during the construction
       Phase)?
       Kind regards
       Patrick

       Hi Patrick,
Yes to both of your questions, we've been scanning for many
years now and are always on the lookout for new/better ways to
squeeze every last drop of potential out of the data. Existing
conditions scanning (with or without scan-to-BIM), as-built
       conditions scanning during/after construction, etc.

I worked for a metal siding/cladding company, and we installed
aluminum composite panels. Had some problem using laser
scanning, because sales representative told me to go look for
the two endpoints of the distance I wanted to measure in the
software, and well this was not precise enough, because once you
zoom in, in a group of points to pick the point, it’s not clear
what you are measuring, and there are just too many points
clustered together so you don’t know which one to pick. I would
love to hear from you guys which applications you use to adapt
the information from the scan to a 3D model so that it can be a
true representation of the built environment. It’s important to
mention that I was looking for a 1 to 2mm precision.
