Same family of products or Speciality products?
By: DSTATTERI Date: February 1, 2017, 9:18 am

Some believe that in order to have a better collaboration, we
need to stick to the same family of products as much as possible
(ex: All Autodesk products or all Bentley or all Trimble...etc.)
through out our project. They still consider this Open BIM as
they also export IFC if needed.
Others go for the best products for them no matter what family
as long as they are specialized in their fields as they all
export a common extension as IFC. They believe they can get the
most out of a specific software because of certain capabilities
yet once it's an IFC, anyone can use it.
What do you think?
thanks

I think this is too broad and will always be situational. My
preference is to stick to one family, as you say, for increased
interoperability and support during design and construction.
Ultimately, as long as the various disciplines'/teams' models
can communicate all of the deliverables, whatever product is
going to get you there with the users you have available will
win.

I concur with that last reply. Software from the same vendor
will always work better together; the drawback is that they
aren't always the "best" tool for a given job. The individual
project should determine whether same vendor is used or not (the
larger the project, the more likely you'll want the best tools
from a variety of vendors).

Processins time (modeling) is one variable
Integration time (interoperability) is another one.
Based on the amount of time spent on each one, should a
decision be made about which solution between "integrated
software suite" or "best of the market" should be used
Processins time usually is a bigger chunk, so going for
integrated might slow you down at the end. But it varies from
one company to another
At the time being, none of the big software company can pretend
they have the best in each discipline.
