BIM Level 2 vs BIM Level 3
DIR By: DSTATTERI

Do you believe BIM Level 3 can be achieved if BIM Level 2 is
hardly done? Or does BIM Level 2 have to be at an advanced stage
(ex: full 4D & 5D) in order to aim for BIM level 3?
Thanks

I don't believe Level 2 and Level 3 are really connected. It
just happens that Level 3 is harder to achieve, but could be
accomplished on its own.

I am not sure I would agree. They do seem disparate but the
underlying intent at level 2 seems to be dealing with models,
objects and collaboration and for Level 3 (integrated and
interoperable BIM) those would have to be present.
Of course, if we merely consider Level 2 as COBie then maybe it
is possible (but a pain in the nether regions to structure and
populate basic objects without a model).

I think it also depends on scope...
IF we are talking Levels 2 & 3 pan-Canadian, or pan-industry, I
agree that it Level 2 would have to be mostly present for Level
3 to succeed.
If we are talking at the level of let's say an international
architecture or engineering firm, or a singular multi-million
dollar project, I think that Level 3 could be set up within a
specific parameter as a full leap forward, regardless of
existing status.

I think the intent of Level 2 is more to get the industry used
to working with new processes. It will help flush out the
problems including contract language, collaboration and model
hand off. It needs to be treated as a step along the BIM
journey, not as the destination that many see it as.

Great discussion about BIM L 2and 3. BIM Level 2 should be used
as the platform to gear businesses up for a L3 workflow, which
is currently still being defined, as it is looking to pull IoT
and Smart Cities Initiatives in to it. You may be interested to
know that the UK wont be calling it BIM L3, it will be called UK
Construction Level 3 or something similar.
