Dynastinae or rhinoceros beetles are a subfamily of the scarab
beetle family (Scarabaeidae). Other common names – some for
particular groups of rhinoceros beetles – include Hercules
beetles, unicorn beetles or horn beetles. Over 1500 species and
225 genera of rhinoceros beetles are known.

Most male rhino beetles have one or more horns, resembling those
of a rhinoceros. Females usually lack horns.

Males use their horns to fight each other for food, mates, or
territory. They will readily battle in captivity, even against
       other species.

Generally, when staging a fight between two beetles, a
cross-section of log is used for an arena. The winner is the
beetle who shoves the other off first.

The largest rhino beetle (and arguably the largest beetle in the
world) is the Hercules beetle (Dynastes hercules).

It lives in South America, but smaller relatives live in the US.
The Eastern Hercules beetle (Dynastes tityus) lives in the
Eastern US. It's up to 2.4 inches long, including the horns.

The Western Hercules beetle (Dynastes grantii) lives in the
Southerwest, and is up to 3.1 inches with its horns.
