Budweiser "Tune Out" Super Bowl Advertisement
By: Budweiser Marketing Team Date: November 19, 2018, 2:22 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
This is a discussion on sexism in media and, more specifically,
some of the most controversial Super Bowl advertisements in
history. As a part of the Budweiser marketing team, it was an
unfortunate shock that our commercial "Tune Out" from the 2004
Super Bowl program was featured in the article 6 Sexist Super
Bowl Ads by Ad Age
(
HTML https://adage.com/article/special-report-super-bowl/most-sexist-super-bowl-ads/311835/).<br
/>In hopes to better our advertisements in the future and preven
t
any similar misunderstandings, we encourage you to share your
opinions on the advertisement in discussion. Constructive
criticism is strongly suggested, we do not and will not respond
to hateful messages nor the use of derogatory language.
Thank you,
The Budweiser Marketing Team

Wow :-[ .... that broad needs to take it down two levels... to
the basement... where you can't hear her and where the laundry
room is at. I tell my wife the same thing every time she thinks
she's the one in charge! I honestly can't believe Budweiser is
receiving backlash for this, women are just too sensitive these
days. They can't complain when they know its true!!! When women
came begging for equality, I kept my mouth shut. But this has
gone too far. I don't know who fed these chicks the idea of
feminism, but they need to be taken down a peg. Great commercial
and great beer. Looking forward to upcoming Super Bowls, I'll
keep an eye out for Budweiser ads. Hope to see more like this
one in the future!

@SteelersFan4690 I hope to God that comment was posted
satirically. This commercial presents a negative stereotype of
wives and women in general which is perpetuated by their
audience: men. The commercial has absolutely nothing to do with
the product. It is completely unnecessary and offensive. It is
very hurtful to suggest that all wives continuously nag and yell
at their spouses to a point where they are immune to noise,
especially as a loving wife and mother of 5. Wives do much more
than just nag. This is a brutal commercial and should be removed
immediately. It glorifies a stereotypical view of wives and
encourages their predominantly male audience to "relate" to the
situation depicted. Even if it was meant to be merely poke fun,
I completely disagree with the manner in which this
advertisement was produced and the supposed joke was executed. I
truly hope my daughters are never exposed to this type of sexism
nor ever come in contact with demeaning men such as yourself
@SteelersFan4690. As a mother, I can only imagine how
disappointed I would be if my either of my sons thought like
you, let alone if they posted such a comment to the internet.
Absolutely brutal. Personally, I am very disappointed in the
Budweiser brand as a whole. #notbuyingit >:(

@MommaBear27 Ok lady, chill. This is exactly what
@SteelersFan4690 was talking about with the whole sensitivity
thing. The commercial was funny, just admit it. It sure as hell
made me want to buy Budweiser beer so I’m pretty sure it
accomplished what it set out to. Commercials are meant to make
you buy stuff, right? Exactly. Sorry that it wasn’t your cup of
tea or whatever, but it obviously wasn’t meant for feminists.
Men watch football more than chicks do, that’s a fact. So, if
Budweiser wants to sell as much beer as possible, they would
target it to their greater demographic. Learn to take a joke and
remove whatever is up your behind. And let your husband decide
what’s good for your daughters, he knows best after all.

@NinjaTurtleBoyz Your dad knows what’s up buddy, listen to him.
Your mom sounds like a drag lol. By the way, PMS’ing means that
your mommy is on her period, that’s how they get pregnant (which
is about the only thing they’re good for other than cooking and
cleaning if you know what I mean ;D)

@MommaBear27 I could not agree more! Advertisements like this
truly influence youth and male perception of females. Women are
just as capable as men, deserve the same recognition and are way
more than nagging machines! However, I do somewhat understand
the underlying message of @FerrariLoverrr. Certainly not the
portion devoted to undermining your opinion nor females as a
whole, but the analyzation of the intended audience and purpose
of the advertisement itself. I understand that Budweiser
perpetuating this negative stereotype of women and marriage is
an unhealthy message, however I doubt that the intent behind the
commercial was malicious but rather humorous. I agree that the
joke, however, was not properly executed but I feel that
Budweiser has acknowledged their mistake and is no longer
deserving of constant backlash.

I agree with @KittyKathy, this commercial is not binary nor
should it be discussed as if it is. There certainly exists an
“in-between” state between the two extremes expressed in prior
comments. @FerarriLoverrr partially addressed how the audience
demographic tends to influence the content of the advertisements
but failed to filter this message to appropriately express his
opinion to all. The purpose of any commercial or advertisement
is to sell a product or service and, in order to do so
effectively, brands must adjust the content and structure of
said commercials to appease a certain audience. In this case,
Budweiser is marketing their beer in the Super Bowl, an event
with a predominantly male demographic, and therefore, has
adjusted their marketing tactics in an attempt to humor the
Super Bowl audience. This advertisement encourages the male
audience to relate to the situation depicted; being trained to
“tune out” their high-maintenance wives after constant nagging.
