ROMEO: "Give me a torch: I am not for this ambling;
Being but heavy, I will bear the light."
-Romeo brings out the topic of his heavy heart or heartache
which was caused by Rosaline.
ROMEO: "With nimble soles: I have a soul of lead
So stakes me to the ground I cannot move."
-'Soles' and 'soul' are homophones. Shakespeare uses them to
show us that he has a conflict with love. 'Soul of lead' shows
us that Romeo has a heavy heart after Rosaline broke up with
him. Basically this is metaphorical language to show us how
gentle Romeo is as he is hurt by love.
ROMEO: "Is love a tender thing? it is too rough,
Too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like thorn."
MERCUTIO: "If love be rough with you, be rough with love;
Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down."
-Romeo despises love and knows what it feels like when someone
you love doesn't return the affections.
-Romeo finds love hurtful and rude.
-Mercutio tells Romeo not to be affected by love.
-Mercutio says if love 'plays rough' with you, play rough with
love.
-He says if you prick love when it pricks you then you'll beat
love down. This shows us Mercutio's straight-forward not caring
attitude towards life.
-He also says that he doesn't care if anyone sees his flaws,
this shows us Mercutio's headstrong attitude which is positive.
