---------------------------------------------------------
[font=comic sans ms]Plot- the plan or scheme that a literary
piece fallows.
Adeline Yen Mah was born into a privileged family, but is
considered bad luck by her siblings and parents because her
mother died due to complications upon giving birth to her.
Adeline’s father later marries a young and beautiful
French-Chinese woman named Jeanne Prosperi (who is called
“Niang” by the children). Niang treats all of her Chinese
step-children coldly while spoiling her biological children, and
soon the oldest sister. Although Adeline is treated so terribly
by her parents and siblings, she has her Aunt Baba who is like a
nanny to Adeline. Aunt Baba was Adeline’s birth mothers best
friend. Aunt Baba continues throughout the story to give Adeline
the strength and push to strive for a better life. Adeline is
very smart and loves school, she excels in academics but is an
exceptional writer. Adeline continues to be the head of her
class every week, bringing home a badge or award. This makes
Adeline very happy because she receives attention from her
father. However, her brothers and sisters start to turn on her
because she gets the little attention her father pays to his
children. Adeline makes friends at school but due to her
parent’s strict rules never gets to have them over or go visit
them. Her friends wonder why she is never allowed to have people
over, or go to anyone’s house, so they decide to surprise her.
However, when they come she is called to her parent’s room and
is punished publicly. Later she is separated by Niang from her
family, and is sent to a boarding school where she is abandoned
by every one even the children in the school flee due to
political war. Adeline is rescued by her Aunt and Uncle and is
taken back home, but is treated the same. No later than a couple
weeks at home Adeline is sent to another boarding school where
she is happily separated from her abusive siblings and her
Niang. While she is there her classmates wonder why her parents
never come to visit or bring her treats. However, Adeline enters
a major writing contest, to her astonishment she wins, and she
gains her fathers acknowledgment. At her desperate pleading her
father allows her to go away to college, but not for what she
desires. Her father requires her to study medicine. However,
Adeline doesn’t mind because it is a way out, and she will later
become a writer.
Exposition- the beginning of the story, the characters and
setting are introduced.
Chinese Cinderella begins during World War II when Adeline is
about three or four years old. The reader is introduced to
Adeline, Aunt Baba, Ye Ye, Nai Nai, father, Niang, her siblings
and step brother and sister, who all live Tianjin. The reader is
introduced to how Adeline is treated horrifically because of the
death of her mother at birth. However, she is treating well by
her loving Aunt Baba who takes care of her like a mother and
lifts her spirits up.
Rising Action- a related series of incidents in a literary plot
that build toward the greatest point of interest.
In Chinese Cinderella there are many rising actions because
Adeline is treated so poorly. Adeline’s siblings treat her as if
she has committed a crime; they make rude comments and
physically abuse her when the adults aren’t around to watch. As
if her siblings didn’t abuse her enough she is also emotionally
and physically abused by her stepmother and father. Adeline’s
father lets Niang have control over the children he barely pays
attention to any of the children. As a present each of the
children receives a baby duck as a gift from their aunt. All the
children get to choose theirs first and Adeline is left with the
smallest one whom she gives the name PLT. Adeline forms a
special bond with the little yellow duck, but one day father
asks one of the siblings to go receive a duck and of course he
chooses PLT, Adeline’s beloved duckling. Father uses the
duckling as bait for the dog to test his obedience; the dog ends
up pouncing on PLT crushing his tiny body and crushing Adeline’s
heart. Also because of Niang’s strict rule of no one can visit
or you may no get to visit your friends, Adeline’s friends start
to wonder why she is never allowed to visit they decide to visit
her as a surprise. When Adeline’s friends show up they make to
much noise and Adeline gets called into her parent’s room and is
publicly humiliated, she is beat and she is called a disgrace to
the family and is told she will be removed from the home.
Climax-a decisive moment that is of maximum intensity or is a
major turning point in a plot.
In Chinese Cinderella the turning point is when Niang and Father
decide that Adeline needs to be separated from the family
because she is “no use”, so she is sent to a boarding school in
Hong Kong. Adeline is separated by her beloved Aunt Baba and her
Ye Ye. Adeline is sent to where the communists are taking over
and putting people in jail. She is sent to a catholic boarding
school were you are supposed to speak English or French which
she speaks very brokenly. Adeline is soon the only student left
in the boarding school, because everyone else’s parents have
come to rescue them. While there she is never visited or
receives any letters or treats.
Falling Action-the part of a literary plot that occurs after the
climax has been reached and conflict has been resolved.
The falling action of Chinese Cinderella is when Adeline is
rescued by her Aunt Reine, Niang’s sister. Aunt Reine doesn’t
tell Niang that she going to rescue Adeline from Saint Joseph’s
, but does anyways because she is not aware of why Adeline was
there in the first place. Adeline meets Uncle Jean and her two
cousins Victor and Claudine whom she loves being with because
they treat her like she is there other child. She has never been
treated like this she gets treated like an equal. However, her
time with them doesn’t last for long she is taken back to her
family. She visits for everyone for a several weeks but after
long Nang ships her off to another boarding school, where she
finds joy in seeking refuge from Niang and her father.
Resolution- the solution of a literary work, the end
Adeline enters a major writing contest, and to her astonishment
she wins. This gains her father’s attention. With her desperate
pleading Father allows her to go to college in London with her
older brother. However, Father doesn’t let Adeline study what
she desires; he lets her go if she studies medicine. Adeline
studies Medicine; it doesn’t bother her because she will later
become a writer

Chinese Cinderella, from the moment she was born, she was hated
because her mum died giving birth to her. Her dad didnt know
her Chinese name, her sibling called her a murder and said she
had bad luck. But she loved her school, because no matter how
much pain her home caused her, the kids at school treated her
equally. When she came home with a badge of good school work,
her dad praised her, for the first time since she was born. This
caused her to try harder because she longed for her dads love,
her siblings hated her though because she took away their shine.
Big Sister, had her left arm paralyzed during birth and so
Adeline was like her slave. She was forced to call her step
mother Niang which meant mother in Chinese. Her Nai Nai(
Grandma) told her too. Niang was like the leader in the house
when Adeline's grandma died and her Nian hated her for going
against her when Niang kept beating her little daughter. When
her siblings got a tram fare, Adelin was left behind. Aunt Baba
was one of Adeline's closest friends. Aunt Baba was her Dia
Dia(dad) older sister. She had no money and kids of her own so
Adeline was put in her room and together, almost inevitably,
they became close friends. But Adelines closest friend was her
grandpa. Her grandpa was kind and gentle but her Niang hated
him, and when he died no one cried but Adeline and Aunt Baba.
Second Brother once put alot of heavy encyclopedias of the top
of the roof and waited for her grandpa to open the door so the
heavy books would clash on his head. Luckily Adeline ran and
opened the door first and ran, the book crashed without causing
ingury. Adelines life evolved around pain until the time she was
old enough to go to Uni. Even before that, Every letter that she
wrote to Aunt Baba and vice versa wouldnt go to them but would
go directly to her Niang and she would read them. Adeline won a
writing competitio that no Shanghui student had won before and
her dad was proud, Adeline took the chance and asked if she
could go to University and England. Her dad said yes if only she
studied Medicine. She did not dare contradict and went. She had
a wonderful time, with science as the oponent. She later changed
her study to Writing and is married happily with two kids.
Chinese Cinderella was the story her Aunt Baba sent her during
Uni, so to give her hope. Chinese Cinderella.
