       Herod the Great
       Archelaus ---> Judea

       Herod Antipas ---> Galilee
       -tetrareh
       Torah ---> Law
-Pentateuch (First 5 books of the Old Testament)
       -Law of Moses
Place of worship --->Synagogue (like a chapel)
       -Temple (like a church)
       Types of Jews ---> Pharisees
       -Sadducees
       -Essenes
       -Zealots
The Pharisees are the largest among the four main groups of
Jews, their name means 'people who are separated from others.'
Their aim is to keep the laws of the Torah in their daily lives,
they have to learn the laws by heart. They believe in angels and
in life after death and the coming of the Messiah.
The Sadducees are known as the priests, among the four main
groups they are the smallest. Most of the members are priests in
a temple and they are very wealthy, 'top of the tree in
society.' They look down on normal people and they don't want to
have trouble with the Romans as that might affect their power.
They are also known as the 'Sons of Zadok' as they took their
name from one of his son's name. They base their thinking on the
Torah and they reject ideas not found in the Torah. They don't
believe in angels, life after death or the coming of the
Messiah. Because they are the opposite of Pharisees, they are
       always arguing with them.
The Zealots are enthusiastic freedom fighters who are fanatics.
The Romans consider them as terrorists, they hate being ruled by
foreigners who are not members of God's chosen people. They
believe in the coming of the Messiah. It is believed that Judas
       and Barabas were Zealots.
The Essenes are like monks who like to be in solitude. They
believe they were the true people of God. Many of their members
didn't marry, but those that did so did it for the purpose of
getting children. They gave up their professions and possessions
in order to give it to help themselves.
SANHEDRIN - Jewish council formed to control religious matters.
Their leader was the temple high priest. There were 70 members
who were Pharisees, Sadducees or other teachers of the law of
       Moses.
Gospel - Good News/Word of God
The Gospel was written 30 years after Jesus' resurrection was
passed orally (word of mouth). The early disciples of Jesus
began dying. Christianity was growing very quickly among people
who had religious background. Christians were being persecuted
by Romans. To show that there was no danger to Rome from
Christianity it was written. The gospels were written to give
hope to Christians so they would not stop believing.
       Mark
       -Companion of Peter
-Mark was one of the most commonest names in the Roman Empire
-Doesn't seem to know much about the geography of Rome or Judea
       -Written in Peter's viewpoint
-He probably wrote the gospel between 64-65AD
-He wrote the gospel in Rome
-Although Peter was a main source in Mark's gospel there were
       others.
       -Passion narrative (suffering of Christ)
       -Jesus spoke Aramaic
-Sayings of Jesus handed down by the word of mouth.

       Believing in God
       Objectives
-To identify the main features of Roman Catholic upbringing.
-To discuss the reasons why parents might choose to raise their
children to have a religious fate.
-To identify how each event in a religious upbringing might
       increase a child's faith.
Sacrament - an outward sign of something holy.
       - an outward sign with inward grace.
Baptism - a rite of initiation where people immerse the person
in water, sprinkle water or pour water over their heads.
Confirmation - Confirming your baptismal vows for yourself, and
       receiving the Holy Spirit.
First Holy Communion - Receiving the body and blood of Jesus for
       the first time.
Transubstantiation - when the host turns into real flesh of
Christ and wine turns into blood of Christ during consecration.

strengthened belief in God. (Self work)
