You're not comfortable getting violent, shoot-em-up video games
for the kids on your gift list this holiday season, but the
clock is ticking and you haven't come up with an alternative.
Relax—video game studio Traveller's Tales and its Lego-themed
series of virtual adventures are here to the rescue. First of

       to gifts that kids will
actually like, "[t]here is only Video Games and Sh** That Isn't
Video Games." You can keep fighting this reality or give in to
it. The good news is that you can gift a video game without
contributing to an 11-year-old's adoption of a sedentary life of
virtual zombie slaying. Instead, you can contribute to his
adoption of a sedentary life of virtual Lego block rearranging!

Huge fan of Lego video games, and I've played most of the titles
in the series all the way through with my own kids, beginning
with Lego Star Wars: The Video Game on a Nintendo GameCube all
those years ago. Surprisingly, even as they've grown older, the
kids continued to enjoy the new Lego games as well. My son got
Lego The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game for his birthday
recently and it's (temporarily) supplanted Halo 4 as the go-to
game on our Xbox 360. (We also have a basketball hoop and
sometimes even go on hikes, so stop judging.) The great thing
about the Lego games is that they're minimally violent,
encourage problem-solving, and possess a unique sense of whimsy
layered over familiar, popular entertainment properties like
Star Wars, the Indiana Jones adventures, Pirates of the
       Caribbean, Harry Potter, and more.
