Country – and it is clear that

Russia has been characterized by this strange combination of
economic weakness and military strength for a long time. At
present, I would say that Russia is not a "normal" country. On
the one hand, you have your oligarchs and ruling class – just
like any other capitalist that class would prefer much
friendlier relations with the West. At the same time, it has a
disproportionately large army that it inherited from the Soviet
Union. In numerical terms it is the second largest army in the
world, although its performance in Ukraine has shown that many
people overestimated Russia's military strength. At the same
time, the Soviet strategic culture has been inherited by the
Russian regime. This shows us a strange imbalance.
On the one hand, there is a ruling class oriented towards closer
ties with the West and, on the other, a military, foreign policy

national security elite – together with
the Armed Forces themselves – that have divergent interests from
those of the ruling class. It can be said that there is at least
some kind of disconnect between the two. This is the reality we
have.

We cannot deny the existence of Russian imperialism just because
it does not fit into our theory of imperialism. What we need to
do is develop a true analysis of what Russia is and what Russia
does, instead of trying to fit Russia's actions into some kind
of preconceived notion of imperialism. Perhaps we should even
update our theory of imperialism to better explain Russia's
aggression against Ukraine. Why do you insist on the importance
of the global left understanding the phenomenon of Russian
imperialism? Let's start with a counterfactual situation.
