Boat Options & Handicapping
By: skipper7 Date: November 20, 2018, 11:55 am

Hi Skippers,
Currently, I show the boat options a skipper chooses for a
particular race.
>> LHR/fpr indicating Light, Heavy, Reaching (sails) / foils,
polish (hull), radio
Not being a real sailor, I wonder what happens in real sailing
and whether we should improve our position tables.
Obviously there is a large difference in boat performance
between All Options -v- No Options.
Are skippers happy with what we have now or should we come up
with a more accurate table and have line honours & adjusted
places.
Without getting too complicated as we don't have the definitive
polars and game engine parameters.
As I produce the stats - we seem to have the following
groupings:
> No Options (Sans Options) - rare
> One Option only - common
> Two Options - common
> All Options - usually happens in RtW non-stop races like the
Vendee
Your thoughts and suggestions please.

I think leave it as it is - I think we can see who's got what
options - and use it as an excuse as to why we are behind (agggh
- I didn't mean to write that! :))

I think what you're suggesting, Em, is a sort of handicapping
system (as used in many sailing races to level out different
types of boat/equipment). Brave idea, but given the number of
option combinations it looks a bit complicated (although
simplifying to your four groups would help), and it would be
necessary to work out what time allowance to give each option
over varying leg distances - quite an algorithm! I'm sure you
could do it, but like B9 I'm happy with the current
arrangements, which give us ready made excuses!
