       View from the Crow's Nest
By: Penquin Date: November 6, 2018, 11:43 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hello All,
Hope you all had a great summer, having seen my ranking plummet
I thought that I would mark my return by entering all 4 races I
had plenty of credits to get the basics for all boats and paid
for a full pack on 40 as deemed best value, however as you can
       see my plans have backfired.
       1) failure was sleeping normally and therefore missed the vital
navigation through the night shoving me in the wrong direction
       2) logging on and off is a real pain and time consuming
       3) trying sus out 4 different tactics simply is to much
       4) you have all got better
       5) I've got worse
Oh well its nice to be back on the water and as you can tell I
am taking a flyer with my 40 by going over the top, will I be
       hero or zero ??
Fair winds All G&T time :)

Great to hear from the Crow's Nest again. Being a bear of
little brain, I decided to confine myself to just one boat in
the RdR (while also enjoying the Odyssey too), and it sounds
from your experience that this is looking like a good idea! I
admire those of you running 4 boats - and particularly Em for
       keeping track of us all.
In the IMOCA class, our early thrust to the west is beginning to
pay off (as with Alex T) but lots will depend on how the weather
dice are thrown in the next 48 hours or so. Towel round the
       navigator's head!
       A peaceful night's sailing everyone.

       Evening All,
I have to say spirits are pretty high on all Penquin's even on
the forty there is still hope although they have just put the
sprouts on for Christmas dinner as they expect they will still
be at sea for Christmas at thier current pace:). In the two
multi hull boats thing are just steady as she goes and whilst
not setting the world on fire they will content with a steady
result, the real challenge is in the IMOCA fleet being plum last
is giving the crew a real challenge and they are not seeing many
passing opportunities so they are taking a gamble of going west
in the hope of better pressure but I have to say it is more in
hope than expectation but only time will tell, time to pull
       anther cork, fair winds All

IMOC: to be honest, this is getting pretty boring. We seem to
have been reaching on starboard for days now, with no end of
this in sight. I'm tempted, like Penquin, to tack just for a
change of scene and do something different, but our nav has
threatened to jump over the side if we do. Well, so be it. I
see there are a few boats well to the west, which paid off
handsomely in the MACIF, but the weather pattern a bit different
this time. I'm carefully watching LK's dive to the east to get
round the Azores high - could be winner Em. And so to my date
       with Mr Sauvignon.
       Fair winds to all.

So the Gadget has passed me and on a more northerly route, I
think the high may have filled by the time Rob gets there. Ain't
it always the way, there's pressure either side of my track. I
could switch tracks, but like post office queues, fluky winds
       are likely to shift.
I think it all depends on what angle I can get on the wind to
the south of the high, but I suspect I'm going to have to gybe a
few times before Guadeloupe and the Gadget will be gone.
Meanwhile I'm trying to stay alert to keep fleet position.

IMOCA. We on IG are indeed hoping that the high has dispersed
by the time we get there, or those of you to the SE will sail
round us. Keeping an eye on Penquin, but I fear it's too big an
ask from there (maybe!). How's it looking where you are LK?

IMOCA - hi guys, well this is going ok-ish - I have the dilemma
       - I can get back west but will end up in light conditions or try
& track a little further south into better pressure but take
longer to get there - oh the fun of sailing.
I keep checking the reports to see where you both are and
wondering if the weather gods are going to continue to shine on
Penquin. I expect to be third if I don't make too many
       mistakes.

I rolled the dice but not to be, unless there an unpredicted
weather change I'm delighted to concede to gadge on the IMOCA,
       extremely well done, Phil

Hopes and dreams all gone in an instant, I had high hopes last
night, i could not see a single boat near me and i was flying
perhaps a famous win was on the cards but no, not are only are
there plenty of boats ahead but i have been unlucky and entered
a none forecasted hole, today is suppose to be one of my dry
days but im going down below with a bottle and a sulk.
