VOR boat speed differences Options V No Options
By: RCLaser27 Date: December 17, 2017, 3:50 am

Hi all,
I think I am closer to answering the question in a live race of
the benefits of Options. This morning, I am sailing same TWA and
windspeed as Huckleberry Finn but he is at 26.5 knots and I'm at
25.3 knots. For my boat I think that I am maxed out as I was at
25.1 knots speed in 26.9 knots of wind last night.
So the difference is 1.2 knots which is 4.5 %. I have no Options
other than Code 0, I assume HF has foils and all goodies.
Anyone else want to discuss this further? VR show similar
figures in their Help Q and A section just for foils.

That sounds about right. There's a separate string somewhere
here in which LK and B9 conclude that the gain can be as much as
around 4%, but it obviously varies with wind strength and
angle. An appreciable difference, though, especially in the
conditions we have had for most of the race so far.

I am beginning to think that 26.5 knots is the max hull speed
even on foils for Full option boats.
I think with Full Options the possible gain is nearer to 6% (in
anything over 16 knots to get her up on foils)
