Well, somehow, I've managed to pass HF, plus I need to do some
nav planning this evening, as work is being a real pain at the
moment - don't they know I've something more important to do !!
Sail well Skippers, Em

We're in a reaching drag race at the moment, where presumably
Mike's lack of foils will count against him, although there's no
info on what speed difference foils (or polish!) make in the
game.
I see the real race has to go round the south of Tasmania, but
we don't. So I guess the question is how far south we should go
before heading for the Bass Strait. Decisions, decisions!

Foils only seem to make a difference downwind and then by about
half a knot 5% or so. Not convinced that they do a lot on the
Clipper. I think they may work better on Volvo yachts. I and
LK gave a good speed comparison when we were in the same wind
pattern and sail angle earlier this leg (we were getting the
same speed). I've checked with a few other UK boats, but
messaging is rubbish in this version of VR.

More info... Foils don't take any effect until over 10 knot
wind speed. Then they only take effect from about 75 degrees
Wind Angle. At 15 knots (Wind Speed) the difference is about
1.5 % or about 0.15 of a knot/hr boat speed. At 20 knot (WS)
the gain, at 75 WA, is nearer 2%. But on wind angles greater
than 80 degrees you get nearly 4% advantage in winds over 10
knots (an presumably not so much on 11 knots!).

Interesting, thank you. Clearly makes an appreciable difference
at certain wind strength and angles, but not a great deal
recollecting the speeds and the gaps opened up by foilers in
the Vendee Globe - although I guess the Clipper boats are
heavier and slower. Probably worth buying for 860 points,
though!
