Maxilla Overtaking Mandible
DIR By: ThaGangsta

When one pulls their maxilla up and forwards, using headgear,
for example, will the mandible catch up, if the maxilla is
already in a position forward relative to the mandible? I do
understand that it will eventually catch up in younger children,
but can the same be said so for adults? If not, what is the
ideal way to make the mandible catch up to the maxilla and/or
prevent this phenemonon?
Also, would palatal expansion cause a scissor bite, if done to a
significant degree? If so, what can be done to prevent this/
make the mandibular arch catch up?

Although I can't speak for the mandible catch up, I can safely
say that the lower jaw does expand or tilt as the upper one gets
wider. I have successfully expanded my maxilla by 7mm and the
only moments I felt my teeth don't quite match was when I took
out the expander after I had turned the screw. After doing some
chewing, the problem was always fixed.
I'm currently testing a method I developed which pulls the
maxilla up and forward during sleep, so hopefully I will be able
to answer your question soon. I will let you know when I get
some results.

Alright, thank you for your reply. Would this method you're
testing be headgear by any chance?

Nope, it's more simple than that. If it works, I will let you
know soon.

Doumi
Am i right in saying then that once youve widened your maxilla
that the lower jaw ( manbible ) widens naturally by itself to
normalise your bite?
Also would you not need a retainer after it? are you using the Y
plate for this?
