Second round of Self NCR

I have decided to resume self NCR treatments. My first attempt
was last summer when I treated for about 17 consecutive days. I
got pretty proficient with the technique and felt like it was
relieving tension and helping my headaches. I didn't observe
much change in my facial structure and I became preoccupied with
other responsibilities. I wrote at the time about the deviation
in my nose, but since then I've noticed that my entire maxillary
arch is shifted to the right about 5mm so that my dental midline
doesn't line up with the midline of my eyes. I also have an
occlusal cant so the right side of my mouth is tilted a few
millimeters lower than the left. Once you recognize something
like that, you can't help but see it every time you look in the
mirror. Motivated by this observation, I have become more
disciplined about mewing, and it is becoming more comfortable to
keep my tongue on the roof of my mouth. I am trying to be
consistent about proper swallowing technique. It is still a
challenge to lift up that posterior third of my tongue, but I am
making progress. I have also been chewing large pieces of gum
and have seen some masseter muscle development, but not much
change in my cheek hollows.
After feeling like I had previously mastered the self NCR
technique, I was surprised when I tried today and wasn't able to
advance past the turbinates. I think a significant part of the
problem was how inflamed my nasal mucosa is from springtime
allergies. The meatuses felt tight and I kept sneezing. I might
have to wait a couple weeks until my allergies improve.

Good luck. I have the same problem with the whole maxilla being
tilted and rotated to one side. It's quite noticeable when
smiling. I wonder how important it is to mew towards the weaker
side instead of towards the center of the currently mislocated
palate. It wouldn't surprise me if doing the latter would
maintain the asymmetry even if forward growth was achieved.

I tried another NCR treatment today because my allergies seemed
better. I was able to advance past the turbinates into the
nasopharynx on both my bottom left and right meatus and middle
right meatus. I couldn't get the balloon to pass in the middle
left meatus, and I didn't try either of the top meatuses because
I started sneezing.

I feel like my tongue automatically puts a little more pressure
on the right side of the palate which is lower and the left side
of the arch which pushes the side of my tongue in more because
it is closer to my true midline.

Today I was able to inflate the finger cot past the turbinates
into nasopharynx through all six meatuses. I'm definitely making
progress, but I didn't really achieve the sensation of expansion
or any cracking or shifting that I sometimes experienced during
my previous round of NCR. I was really only able to squeeze the
bulb two or three additional times after the balloon pushed
through into the nasopharynx before my gag reflex forced me to
deflate the balloon. I just remembered that last year
"Improvement" recommended squeezing my thumb inside my fist to
suppress the gag reflex. I'll try that next time. In the past I
usually treated one side per day and alternated sides. I think I
will return to that schedule when I'm ready to begin a
consistent routine. Unfortunately I am going out of town soon,
so I might wait to begin an intensive series after I return so
that I can be more dedicated.
I have also been doing some Mew push swallows and suck holds
with my tongue on my palate after completing my NCR treatment.
Intuitively this seems like it might help promote shifting along
the sutures after loosening them with the NCR.

You should likely check the thread on handling bodies.
Just doing this will likely not handle your body if it has not
already done so.

I'm just getting over a cold, so rather than begin to alternate
sides, I decided to treat all six meatuses again today.
Initially I was having some trouble with air leaking out around
my dental floss seal, but adding more floss solved the problem.
As I remembered, the thumb trick did seem to help my gag reflex,
and it seemed like I got pretty good expansion across the
nasopharynx from all six positions. I think I felt a bit of an
ear popping sensation during one of the inflations.
In addition to the sporadic self-ncr treatments, I've been
chewing gum pretty consistently, but I think I need to focus
more on getting the posterior third of my tongue up on my
palate.

I inflated through all six meatuses again today. If I am able to
start a series of daily treatments then I might start
alternating nostrils, but I think I will keep treating both
sides on incidental days. I haven't had the time that I expected
to treat consistently. It has been almost 2 weeks since my last
session. I should go back and read through the instructions that
I used when I first learned the methods to make sure I am not
missing anything. I'm consistently able to inflate inside the
nasopharynx, and I felt a little pressure in my ears today, but
I haven't experienced the kind of satisfying sensation that I
remember from my previous round last year. I am worried that I
am not effectively engaging the sphenoid bone. Maybe there isn't
as much seismic energy built up along my sutures since I've been
mewing? I am using a different brand of finger cot which might
be a little bigger than last year. Could that be the problem?

Great to hear you are giving it another shot. I had a go at Self
NCR a few weeks back. I inflated through the left nostril and
immediately after inflation I got a sharp burning achy pain all
across the left side of my skull. I've not bothered since.
I really think myofunctional therapy is the way to go, after
all, the techniques and habits they teach you are how your face
should have formed with anyway.

In my mind, the mewing/myofunctional techniques are the most
important to prevent further deterioration, and to slowly
improve the facial structure. I'm hoping "NCR" might help
expedite that process. I'm sorry you had a bad experience. Was
that your first attempt, or had you treated successfully before?
Did you advance past the turbinates and expand within the
nasopharynx or did it just inflate within the meatus? NCR is
definitely more risky than the functional/postural strategies.

Yeah, like I said, in my mind functional/postural techniques are
most important, and NCR is a supplement which might enhance the
effect of those strategies.
