Palate Expanders Usage

Hello everyone,
On this forum there has been quite a bit of talk on palate
expanders. I know many individuals from various internet forums
have ordered their expanders from various sources.
But, I want how are you guys using them, and how much do you
know to expand? And are guys getting advice from a professional
or are you doing it on your solely on your own.
Thank you

It's not me, but there's a young man (26) on YouTube named PJ
Wilson - check out his great channel. This image is him using
ALF (Adult Lightwear Functionals) after 9 months with a holistic
dentist. He is expanding his palette and correcting an underbite
without surgery:

I'm really encouraged and had other members suggest this to me.
I'll be asking an Orthotropics dentist about it from a
consultation, even though I can't yet afford care...
His profile is amazing and smile looks so different!!!

I'm definitely no expert. But I know that Mew expands at a
semi-rapid rate of about .5-1mm per week. Rapid expansion goes
at about 1-2 mm per week I believe. And the DNA and homeoblock
appliance people go at the ultra slow rate of about 1mm per
month.
I believe the ideal is the semi-rapid rate proposed by mew. The
reason you want semi-rapid rate is because you need enough force
in the expander to force the sutures in the palate to separate
and therefore the maxilla to expand. If you go ultra-slow you'll
only get alveolar expansion, which isn't that awesome and won't
create too much change from a health or aesthetic stand point.
How you measure this I have no idea. I just eyeball it and if it
hurts badly I stop expanding. I would like to hear some advice
from someone who's seen a professional, and I am thinking of
consulting with one myself.
Mew also recommends chewing on hard stuff to ensure that you
teeth are firmly rooted in the gums, so that the teeth don't tip
during the expansion.
That's about all I got. I'd love to hear experiences and
thoughts from other members.

What does alveolar expansion consist of though, if not expansion
through the maxillary sutures? As far as I understand, alveolar
process is a part of maxilla itself. Is it a matter of bone
remodelling vs new bone formation through opened sutures?
I think this may be related to my own results, as my palate has
widened while facial appearance seems to have stayed the same.

Yes, I believe your right. Light forces merely remodel the shape
of the bone. Whereas higher forces open the sutures and allow
new bone to be formed within this opening. However, don't ask me
to drill down into the mechanics any further than this , because
we are seriously entering into territory that is beyond my pay
grade.

So from that, PJ's profile change was from bone remodeling but
not growing new bone? Is there a difference between them? I'm
out of my depth big time too but curious :)

The difference is that his dental arch expanded, but his actual
maxillary bone did not expand.
Here's a video with mew that might clear things up

That cheekbone expanding looks promising. Just tried it out;
think I'm going to add it to my routine. Great Post!!!
