       Attempted Nasal Release
   DIR By: reenochrobinson
       Date: July 13, 2016, 8:09 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
For the past three days I've attempted to perform on myself what
is probably best described as "nasal release" or "nasal
specific" (since I'm not practicing any of the proprioceptive
testing or positioning employed during true NCR). I bought a
sphygmomanometer bulb and some finger cots. I've used a cut-off
cotton swab to insert the finger cots as far as I can into each
of the meatuses between the nasal turbinates. I've alternated
sides starting on the bottom, then the middle, then the top,
then the bottom again (eight inflations total). I've had some
mixed results. It has been difficult to get a good seal using
detal floss to tie the finger cots to the valve on the
sphygmomanometer bulb so while the balloon inflates, air slowly
leaks back out. Also, I feel like the balloon is inflating
inside the meatuses but not extending back into the nasopharynx
to apply pressure to the sphenoid. I have been using two layers
of the largest size cots that came in the assorted box I
purchased. The first day, I felt a slight cracking sensation as
if a small positive shift had occurred but I haven't been able
to replicate that on repeated attempts.
I'd really appreciate any suggestions to improve my technique.
I've tried to track down a copy of the self-NCR instructions,
but couldn't find an active link.
In addition to the nasal release, I'm working on tongue posture
and swallowing technique. I had traditional orthodontics as an
adolescent and had my wisdom teeth removed. The bridge of my
nose is crooked/deviated (I think from a childhood accident). If
at all possible, I would like to achieve better symmetry and
enhance my cheekbones and cheek hollows.

Thanks so much MJON! This looks really helpful and mentions the
issue of how to get the balloon past the turbinates and into the
nasopharynx that I've been struggling with. I'll read it through
       and try again later today.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
I had a little better luck on my fourth nasal release session
today after reading the instructions MJON sent me. During my
first three sessions, I was having trouble keeping air inside
the balloon and advancing past the turbinates into the
nasopharynx. I had been using dental floss to tie the finger
cots to the valve on the sphygmomanometer bulb. The instructions
mention wrapping the floss around many times to achieve a better
seal. This did the trick! Without air leaking from the balloon,
I was able to try the technique described in the instructions,
placing the finger cot as far into the meatus as possible,
inflating slightly and then pushing/twisting to advance the
balloon into the nasopharynx before inflating more.
       I think I understand the principle now, and I know I wasn't
doing it right during my earlier sessions. However, I was still
only able to reach the nasopharynx twice (once on my left bottom
meatus and once on my left middle meatus). Both of these times
gave some minor popping/cracking sounds and some pressure in my
ears. I only got the tight feeling of inflating inside the
meatus on all of my other attempts and couldn't push it farther
inside to reach the nasopharynx. I think my right side is
especially difficult because the bridge of my nose deviates to
the left. This seems to make the passages tighter on the right
side. Hopefully, with continued practice, I'll be able to make
       it work.
Thanks so much to Ben for writing the instructions and to MJON
for sending them to me! I'll continue to update here with any
       additional observations or progress.

Day 5: I'm still struggling with reaching the nasopharynx. I
think I only really got through on the top left meatus and even
then I just felt the pressure of the balloon between the
turbinates decrease as it seemed to advance through, but I
didn't get any cracking or popping sensations. On many of the
other meatuses I pushed mucus into my throat. I'm wondering if
consecutive days of treatment might irritate the mucosa, causing
swelling that could make passage of the balloon more difficult.
I'm also running out of the large-size finger cots from my
assorted box. Maybe I will take a few days off, order a new box
of large finger cots and allow any inflammation to subside
       before making another attempt.

You don't need to get a cracking or popping sensation. A mild
feel of expansion is ok, accompanied with relaxation and better
       breathing
If you use a very large balloon, it could go way down your
throat, past the sphenoid. Try to shorten/extend the cot until
       you find your perfect size
I had the same problem when I started, so I had to shorten the
balloon to make it fit my head.

Thanks for the advice! I think I might need a larger size since
I'm having trouble advancing past the turbinates. I haven't ever
felt it extending down so far as to reach the oropharynx or
experienced the sensation of needing to cough.

Hmmm, how much are you inflating? Are you fully squeezing the
       bulb on each inflation?

I'm pushing the deflated cot as far into the meatus as possible
with a probe, then inflating slightly (not a full squeeze at
first) as I push inward with the bulb and continue to squeeze
fully 3+ times until it successfully reaches the nasopharynx or
the pressure in my nose becomes uncomfortable. Usually I just
feel the pressure build inside the meatus but a few times I've
felt it advance further into the open space beyond. I've never
gotten it to work on my right side which seems to be tighter
because the bridge of my nose deviates to the left.

It sounds perfect. Maybe you were expecting too much.
