THE GIVER BY LOIS LOWRY: CHAPTER 1 AND 2
By: Mayorcitobookworm Date: January 30, 2016, 9:18 pm

Dear students
Lowry wrote The Giver during the period of "ethnic cleansing" in
Bosnia, when Serbian forces attempted to rid the country of
Muslims. At the same time, a debate was taking place in the U.S.
over the practice of euthanasia by Dr. Jack Kevorkian. Lowry's
novel explores each of these developments: treatment of
outsiders, intolerance, societal perfection, and
physician-assisted suicide. This historical background provides
Lowry of ideas to write THE GIVER.
You just read chapters 1 and 2 that described Jonas’ family and
their lives. Jonas lives a reality that is totally different
from ours. Pretend you just went on a visit to Jonas’ house and
Compare how your life is similar or different than Jonas’
life

[pre]In itself, you can find things that
look but there are factors that differentiate, for example,
so-called Eight, nine, twelve, etc. represent my life in the
third grade, fourth, fifth ... Another case, it is true that we
have schedules but are not as rigid as the "curfew" or exactly
we have to do everything that we propose: we choose . Family
gatherings are done when they can not rely on a schedule for the
o[pre][/pre]ccasion but, on the contrary to the case of Jonas.
What is completely different is that we who choose our vocation
or sleep; on the contrary, in the case of Jonas, he is bound to
o accept the vocation to choose him. In addition, it is also
different from the "liberation". In my world it is known as
euthanasia, but in some places is prohibited, and others, is
only an option for families, it is not mandatory! >:(
We we can experience the thrills and enjoy every moment of life,
we can see colors and have memories ;). In conclusion, a
leading life as Jonas would make no sense; a life without
emotions, without love :(... is nothing. :'( :'(
Well that's my opinion :D, I do not know what others think
???, but I would like to know. ;D[/pre] (poor Jonas ::)
:o :-\ :'( :P)

Well, in first place, one difference is the organization of the
community, for example there are the groups of ones, two, etc
that are as classrooms. However, their groups end up to twelve
years and the guys are waiting to be assigned for their
assignment. In contrast, we ended up studying a fifth grade of
secondary school, and to carry out our professions time after.
In addition, each member of the community has an assignment,
that is to say all collaborate in the style of life very tidy
and routine in Jona's community. On the contrary, we can see in
the streets a lot of people without work, we know about crime
and insecurity, however, this is not experienced in Jona's
community since they aren't accustomed to feel this type of
sensations and they have a perfect life without worries or pain.
Secondly, the freedom of choice is almost non-existent in the
community, and this can be seen in the missions assigned to them
by Elder's Committee to the Twelve. These latter must continue
their training and prepare for adult life, while us at the end
of study we prepare for college life in which we chose what
profession is of our preference.
In addition, newchildren are assigned a name, this is different
for us because our fathers are those who chose us a name, but in
Jona's community this doesn't happen. And, we can view certain
differences, either the term family by family unit also the
rituals of each Ceremony.
P.D: Maji I'm agree with you :) You have reason ;) this kind of
life is a little private of wonderful things :( For that I
think that we can value and appreciate each day of our life ;D

Shannen, you also have reason ;). I had forgotten that detail
:P ,"In addition, newchildren are assigned a name,
this is different for us because our fathers are those who chose
us a name, but in Jonas's community this doesn't happen" ;D .
Not even the adults are free to father a child and on top,
they're given one can not even put a name to your liking >:(.
Simply, Jonas´s reality is impossible to assimilate with our
reality :) ;D .
Although that would be our life without the rules ... ??? ???
??? ??? :(

Well, one difference is their organization, there are groups of
ones, two until twelve; on the twelve group is designated their
profession like breeders, midwives, among others. Compared with
our life, we studied kinder, primary and high school; then we
choose our profession, a profession that is to our liking. Other
difference is the way of see the freedom, they have rulers that
bar some behaviors, and the people who break this kind of laws
is "released", bereft of their work and privileges. These
Situations don't happen on our daily life, if one person break
the rules aren't call "released", and the way of pay is with
others manners.
Their life is more strictly, very different to our life. :-X

Ok. First, the Jonas family live in a community where the
organization is different to our reality and our costumes. In
that place, all people are assigned to a specific job, this,
when the person become a "Twelve". That event be repeated in
different ceremonies, when this person has became a "One",
"Two", "Tree",etc, where they obtain new functions and something
related to the age.
That community is organized in those different groups of age and
also in groups where the adults keep their functions assigned.
Also, the community is very advanced related with the alert of
something strange to the normal routine (As the incidents of the
aircraft).
Referring to the Jonas family, they are a union family, where
exist a good relation between the members of it and a good
communication related with the feelings of each one (the family
ritual). Also, they respect the rules of the community and
understand each member of their family. They represent a good
example of familiar relationship. :)
In contrast with our reality, i found many differences, of which
i feature the familiar relationship, the organization of the
comunity (alerts, simulacrums, obtain resources), and a new
system of assigned.

Our lives are different, although it is true, we live in a
society with rules, but they have too many and they are very
strict, every age (the seven new eight ... twelve) have to live
according to what the rules tell them.
They cannot freely express what they think because some things
are considered wrong, but we if we can do, and even silent about
what we do not want to tell.
They have very tight schedules, but we also exist in the free
time we can do what we like but they have to volunteer, his life
is scheduled.
They will be chosen a profession and a family, we are free to
choose what we want to study and do our parents have begotten
us, they do not; children of the community are given to a family
unit after being raised in a cross.

I think that Jonas' family and society are different than our
reality. Firstly because they have schedules to talk about some
specific thing, like in the evenings. Secondly because they must
talk "properly" that means that they cannot express themselves
as " I'm hunger". Another thing is that they have an specific
age to learn things as ride a bike or change their clothes and
they cannot decide their own future, it's decided. But also they
are a little bit similar than our reality because they have
families and live with them.

Well. First, the organization. Jonas community is very well
organized, all people have a role, so that all day they were
assigned to play different roles, their life were more routine
than ours, because we have a little more freedom as we decided
what to do.
Second, the family. In the Jonas community the children (two)
were assigned to each family unit, they didn't had the freedom
to engender their own children, here there are midwives;
however, in our society there is freedom to engender the number
of children the couple want to have. Also, here is called
“Family”, no “Family unit”.
Another clear difference is the Equality, in the Jonas community
it has tried to establish equality without races or religions,
here there is an equal conditions, all people play a role in the
community, nobody starves, here no pain, no wars, no crime. On
the contrary in our society has not yet been established
equality, here are races, religions; there are different
cultures, which have a different costumes. However, there is
also discrimination, crime, wars and some people starve.
From my point of view, I think that many things in the Jonas
community should be established in our reality, not being
radical as the Jonas' community, but work to achieve equal
conditions for all. :P

I think there are many differences. The main difference is the
world organization of Jonas because all people live with many
rules, order and control by the highest authorities. Also,
another difference is that there is not much freedom of speech
or choice. For example, they can not decide your favorite job
because there is a committee with the task of assigning a
mission to twelve year olds. Also, parents can not decide the
name or number of children that they wish to have. The third
difference is the style of life of the population because they
are not accustomed to experience feelings such as pain or strong
concerns. That is, the inhabitants of this world have an almost
perfect life with a great family communication, without social
problems such as crime, murders and social diseases (alcoholism,
drug addiction, etc.). However, they do not have access to many
emotions of life or make use of their freedom to express
themselves.
