       As usual, Ali was kind to write a few explanatory words in reply
       to my queries. Perhaps you will find them useful too:
       1. One more question referring to Autumn – the dedication there
       is for “Sarah Margaret Hardy Wood”. Is it a real full name or
       “Hardy” is something you added to play with “wood”? (I’m asking
       because in Winter your dedication is for “Sarah Wood” – no
       mention of Hardy).
       It's actually for Sarah Margaret Hardy PERENNIEL Wood, if you
       look again. A hardy perenniel is a type of plant that can live
       for more than an annual cycle.
       2. tweeby mates (p. 51) What’s “tweeby” and why is it demeaning?
       Tweeby is a made up word which concentrates on the word twee at
       the heart of the word tweet
       3. (p. 76) Why was Charlotte’s dissertation “laughably sincere ?
       Because its subject is debatably laughable and slight.
       4. (p. 109)
       I have a problem with this paragraph. Everything is perfectly
       clear until the yellow part – I’m not sure what it refers to and
       also I’m not sure what you meant by this idea of negotiating
       about living or dying:
       Though it might be worth it, to re‑experience what it’s
       like to be sick, because from what she remembered there was a
       certain pleasure in it,
       anarchic force of clearance, one of those powerful liminal times
       in a life when death isn’t just preferable to being alive,
       because you feel so lousy,
       but that also let you negotiate with the powers that be about
       your own living or dying.
       I can't help you here, other than to comment on the way, when
       we're being really violently sick, we want to die.
       5. (p. 114)
       Lux mentions that she “made up some beds” before Iris arrived at
       Chei Bres, presumably for Iris, but later Iris complains there
       is no bed for her: “Witness my first time sleeping on the floor”
       (p. 230) Have I discovered some unintentional inconsistency?
       No – 'making up a bed' can still happen with no actual physical
       bed in the room.
       6. (p. 129)
       What does Sophia mean by “We all mine, landmine and undermine
       ourselves”, which she thinks having seen Iris on TV?
       She means what she says, in all the meanings of the word mine.
       7. (p. 195)
       Sophia says that The Holly and the Ivy is the “only truthful
       Christmas carol”. What does she exactly mean by “truthful”?
       We'll have to ask Sophia, who always believes her own truths, no
       matter how strange they are.  And maybe also have a read of the
       words of the carol.  It's certainly one of the more primal and
       medieval of the Christmas carols
