I wonder whatever you have done with the whole section about
"to-day" (starting on page 223, the beginning of Part 3)...

I haven't decided yet but I think I might use oggidì, which is
an old-fashioned way to say oggi, today, and play with the fact
that the word rhymes with five out of seven days of the week, so
the child could mistake it for a mysterious eighth day that no
longer exists. Of course this means I'll have to change big
chunks of the text as well. I'm going to change my mind another
twenty times before submitting the translation, I'm afraid

Yes, that would mean losing the whole idea of the word being a
verb and what it means "to day" - this is a tough nut to crack
indeed...

In Italian it can work as a verb as well because oggidì could
sound like the simple past of the non-existing verb "oggidire",
which can also be read as "to say today". I have to work on and
around it. Some acceptable solutions can come out of it, only
(of course) quite different from the original

I may have an idea, just not sure how good it is. I'm going to
use an archaic spelling of the word "today" in Polish, which
sounds a little like a 3rd person plural verb (stretching your
ear a bit) - and that will be the basis of the child's
confusion. In this way the departure from the original
discussion about "what's to-day" won't be too great...
