       Bass Lesson #1 - Learning the fretboard

       Here is an interesting way to start learning where the notes are
       on your fretboard.
       Start with your open strings:  From thickest to thinnest: (B) -
       E - A - D - G ;  (B) is for our 5-string players!
       Now find the octave for those open stings. It's the 7th fret of
       the next string down. For example, play the open E sting, then
       the 7th fret on the A string - that's the octave for E. Now you
       know where two E notes are on the neck. Next, play the open
       string, then play the 12th fret of the same string - that's the
       same octave as the previous note on the 7th fret.
       Ex 1:

       Now, do the same exercise with the remaining strings. Each time
       you pick up your bass do this exercise first thing as a warm-up
       and you'll start to memorize where the notes are.
