Bass Lesson #1 - Learning the fretboard

Here is an interesting way to start learning where the notes are
on your fretboard.
Start with your open strings: From thickest to thinnest: (B) -
E - A - D - G ; (B) is for our 5-string players!
Now find the octave for those open stings. It's the 7th fret of
the next string down. For example, play the open E sting, then
the 7th fret on the A string - that's the octave for E. Now you
know where two E notes are on the neck. Next, play the open
string, then play the 12th fret of the same string - that's the
same octave as the previous note on the 7th fret.
Ex 1:
G|-----------|
D|-----------|
A|------7----|
E|--0--------|
B|-----------|
Ex 2:
G|------------|
D|------------|
A|------------|
E|--0----12---|
B|------------|
Now, do the same exercise with the remaining strings. Each time
you pick up your bass do this exercise first thing as a warm-up
and you'll start to memorize where the notes are.
