Re: Re-discovering DF.

Hmm, since DF has a lot of side quests and sagas, it'd be great
if we had a mix of central storylines and side stories. Right at
the beginning, it'd be preferable to hop immediately into the
Dragon Egg Saga (because it is central and unique to the game),
but after that, we can spend many many weeks going through a mix
of main/side storylines.
As for the number of quests per week, I'd say it depends heavily
on the quest length. The Sneevil questchain is super-quick to go
through and should not take more than one week, while quests
like True Mortal's Forest Gate may take lots and lots of
farming. I'd say three normal quests per week would be good
though...
I've also had an idea: we could wear new sigs to advertise the
initiative. I've thought of this while seeing that scene in the
latest DNs (Roirr standing in the silvered woods). We could take
spectacular images from the game, shrink them to sigs and add
something like "Rediscover DragonFable like you've never seen it
before" - and make the sigs link to the AEF thread. It'd help
spreading the word! :)

would like to get back into DF, honestly speaking.

I'm for the idea of making a bunch of the threads in this
section, as well as a specific channel. I know how to register
channels, but since most of the BoH channels (outside of main)
are already registered with my account, I actually can't
register anymore (who knew there was a limit?). So I can help
someone else create a couple.
Also, if the DF works well, I think the next game that would be
best to work with would be AQ. We still have some clan members
(Like Leon) who play regularly, and I think Elryn may be willing
to help here and there as well.

So I received a reply from Mel about AEF. I'm posting my message
to her first, so you can all understand everything that was
communicated, and then her response is below that.
Hello Melissa,
I believe we’ve met before but to reintroduce myself just in
case, I’m Kalanna, and I am currently one of the Captains for
the Beacons of Hope.
As a clan we are currently working on a new initiative that we
are currently calling Rediscover Dragonfable. While we have not
started yet, we are already hoping that we can expand it to both
DF GD community and other AE games. I am currently heading this
up, working with my fellow Beacons to determine where we want to
go with this initiative.
The currently stated goals of the initiative are:
a)To assist old players returning to Dragonfable in catching up
to the current storyline
b)To reacquaint longtime players with Dragonfable by creating
new characters and playing through the game together as a
community
As far as formatting goes, for part A, we hope to work with
players to set up a combination of help threads as well as
institute a buddy system to help players connect outside of the
forums. For part B, we want to break the DF storyline into parts
that would be played weekly or maybe biweekly. We would like to
have chat rooms that are open for people to chat together as
they play, as well as discussion threads. While we are still
determining IRC rooms, currently the proposed threads are as
follows:
1. Rediscover Initiative - Catch Up: Help Thread
Description: Stuck on a quest? We’re here to help! Post your
question and someone will get back to you soon!
2. Rediscover Initiative - Catch Up: Buddy System Sign Up
Description: Want a veteran player to help you catch up! Check
here to find players to chat and play with!
3. Rediscover Initiative - Catch Up: IRC Open Floor Times
Description: Check here for times when veteran players will be
in the designated IRC chat room to answer questions, help you
play, or just chat with!
4. Rediscover Initiative - Play Through: Discussion
Description: Finish this week’s quest assignments? Come on in!
5. Rediscover Initiative - Play Through: Quest Assignments
Description: Check here for this week quests assignments or, if
you’ve missed a week, find old assignments from past weeks.
6. Rediscover Initiative - Play Through: Find a Partner
Looking for someone to play this week’s assignment with? Check
here for others who are looking for the same. Remember IRC is a
great chat client!

While we are hopefully starting this initiative within the clan
within the next couple weeks, we would like to make a post in
the DF GD to see if any other DF players would like to join us.
However, after seeing how some suggested player-run initiatives
have been met by both the DF staff and the AKs, we would like to
run this by you first for both approval and feedback.
Introducing the number of threads we hope to have is probably
very tricky for the staff, and the concept of IRC rooms and
private player interactions make moderation extremely difficult.
While we would be disappointed if the forum staff do not believe
this to be reasonable for the AEF, I believe we would also
understand why, having seen some suggested initiatives in the
past.
I would like to finish by adding that the overall goal of this
beyond our two goals is to both rekindle interest in Dragonfable
and create an opportunity for DF players to grow together as a
community, and I hope the forum staff can understand that.
Sincerely,
KalannaDae

Hi Kalanna,
Sorry for the late response. I was very busy IRL and didn't have
enough time to sit still long enough to give you a reply that
was warranted for such a well thought-out initiative.
Your ideas are indeed wonderful and shows the level of
thoughtfulness that the Beacons have always been known for.
However, there are problems that interfere with such good
intentions. I will list the issues that arise from such a plan
and then list a few alternatives that could be considered for
your plan.
1.) Since DF is a single-player game, it's difficult to be able
to walk someone through gameplay. It's not as easy to do as it
is with an MMO game where players can play side by side.
2.) As much as the Beacons are respected and well-known, I
cannot give them any special privileges or areas of the forums
in which they can carry out the ideas that you have listed. If
that is done, then just about every other active clan will want
the same rights, privileges and areas. With such limited
resources and forum staff, this makes it impossible, sadly.
There are also some things that the BoH can actively pursue and
participate in. Not only the GD, but there's also the
Q&A/EC/BS/Pedia and Guides sections of the DF forums that they
can volunteer to help other players in. The Pedia and Guides
sections are always needing more help. Particularly the Guides
section. There are many guides that are out of date or haven't
even been implemented yet by other players. It's worth the time
to look into and discuss between yourselves what anyone is
capable of donating their time towards.
I also recommend using programs like Skype for real time
interaction with other players. Twitch for streaming and youtube
for showing quest run-throughs. Youtube in particular is a great
tool for showing newbies how to get a good start on the game.
You might also want to open up your own forum and dedicate a new
section/subforum that could be dedicated solely for players who
are not in your clan/alliances. Also, since the BoH is actively
using IRC now - you can dedicate certain days/times for other
players to join in. You could even start a new channel soley for
that purpose.
There are many ways to achieve your goals. I'm sorry that we
cannot open the forums more for your project, but there is much
creativity in the BoH and I'm positive that everyone can make it
work with a little creative thinking!
If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask!
M4B
So, I guess the questions is, where do we want go from here?

Hmm... so the AEF are off-limits then. That's sad.
I don't know how well our own forums work, but maybe we could
indeed try to open up a section for Rediscover DF (I'm going to
call this RDF) and have a channel. Maybe we could try to contact
geo, Tomix or Ash? The best thing to effectively launch RDF
would be a Design Note, and I don't think a single DN would put
too much strain on the AEF mods...
I'm not sure it'd work, but that's an idea.

Azan's suggestion seems to be the best, without ever having to
post too many threads in one subforum on the AE forums. In
addition to this, a single chat group on Skype also sounds good
enough. Only we can see the majority of threads here, since most
forums are hidden from public viewing.
I will just add one minor warning: Geo doesn't reply to PMs on
the forums, so you should PM Tomix instead just so he may talk
to her about it.
Like Mel said, the other subforums in DF, like Guides and the
Encyclopedia, are always needing more voluntary hands, even if
it's just one or two more.

I don't think we have any chance of getting a mention in the DN
for the same "fairness towards other clans" reason mentioned in
the PM.
In fact, I have a mild fear it might get taken the wrong way. We
should think long and hard how to phrase that, if we decide to
contact Geo, Tomix or Ash in any way. The last thing we want is
putting more on their plates.
Sorry, likely I'm just overly worried, but I don't want us to
come across as pushy, even though our intentions are good.

I'd have to agree that it is going about the wrong way, after
giving it some thought. It's better that we keep this initiative
outside the AE forums and only in here.

Re: Re-discovering DF.

Okay, having sat on this for a bit, I think I'm ready to offer
up more thoughts.
While opening up our own forums to the gen pop is an idea, it's
not one that, as a captain, I am comfortable with. It's entirely
possible that a mistake will be made when limiting a forum
member's access, and for our own privacy, I'm not really
comfortable with doing so.
So my idea is this: make new forums.
It's not ideal, but I think it's the best solution we could come
up with if the AEF is closed to us. I would be interested in
talking to Mel to find out what kind of support we could expect
from the forum staff if we were to make a post in the DF GD or
even the AE GD (or even the OOC Room if it came down to it).
Even push it on the DNs? We could link it on the clan page as
well. Going off of Azan's idea, we can even push it on our sigs
(even have a release/launch date to advertise?).
That's my main thought coming out of this.
However, I think Mel has a good point as far as the Guides go. I
know Guides seem kind of intimidating as an individual, working
together to create some better and extremely comprehensive
guides for beginning/returning players seem a worthwhile cause
that fits in with the goals of the initiative that were posted
earlier.
I am definitely wanting your guys' feedback. I'm not completely
ready to give up on bringing this to the AEF as of yet, since I
think it's a worthwhile outreach project, but it all depends on
what you guys, as a clan, want out of this.
