       Group MMOing
By: Elryn Date: March 13, 2016, 4:26 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
So I was chatting with Mort a bit and she was curious about this
as well. Bear with me (N.B.: pun not included)
       First of all
I somewhat have this issue when it comes to MMOs and I wonder if
others do too. I have no problem playing Dragonfable as it is an
RPG with the things I really like in an RPG: unique art style
(so much of this, I likely like abilities in combat more for the
art than for the damage numbers I get from them) and (plays into
and compliments) awesome storyline. Then I socialize/do
shenanigans with friends on the forums and with the clan.
       Everything is splendid.
MMOs are trickier. Off the bat, combat in MMOs is definitely not
the most critically important thing to me. The thing that
actually really gets me is a really well-made and deep skilling
system. I am skiller at core you could say: done well, I
definitely prefer the depth of skilling system over that of
combat. Combat is entertaining to a degree and there is always
the fun of discovering a new novel way of fighting in a game
(Skyrim archer sniping for the win), but it often becomes
repetitive and a bit boring rather quickly for me: there is
after a limit of moves and actions constrained to set field of
mobility to take down a foe. The exception would be when done
right + really fun doing together with someone else (Ooooh the
       warmongering competitions in wars *grins*).
And then in order for that deep skiling part to work long
term... good friends you already know and trust is essential
(ergo like the clan). I am really very not good generally at
just jumping in to any group or guild in an MMO that I am not
previously familiar with. I much prefer to stick to folks that I
know and small tight nit group that spread the love between each
       and all of them.
This brings to the second point
And you folks? Given that we all come from a single player game,
do you find some certain specific reticences like these for
       MMOs?
I am also curious if there is an MMO out there that might suit
everyone more generally as something of clan thing to do
together. Outside of playing Dragonfable on a weekly basis and
with the release, is there an MMO you would see be fun to play
       as a clan?
It might be tough... given that I have already shown how picky I
       am myself xD.
After some recent playing, I definitely have come to the
conclusion that Diablo 3 bores me (it is focused on combat,
combat drops and build assembling so sort of makes sense). Even
with close friends, it would not be able to keep my interest in
       it long term.
Games I find have some appeal:
-Old School Runescape would be a good example. ESPECIALLY
experience wise: knowing it would take years to achieve max
levels in every skill on a casual basis is something I like
because I despise, despise, when games push you to rush towards
the end game like mad and drop daily login incentive to the
point you feel pressured into playing otherwise you will lose
out (N.B.: this last bit might as well be a continuation of the
description of likes and gripes of MMOs from above).
-Albion Online (thanks to Ronin for bringing it up) looks pretty
good itself as well from a small peak at it. At least, the
crafting/skilling part looks to be there. Another problem with
me is that I like to discover things myself so I cannot watch
too many videos on this XD.
-Not quite sure what else. I have heard of Black Desert Online
being fairly good however I have not very much seen the crafting
       system. Mostly the combat.
Also... did I mention that I can like combats for very flashy
and whacky and creative reasons and well done? Now you know why
       I like mages... XD
       Enough rambling. Your turn.

       May I suggest Mabinogi (
  HTML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mabinogi_%28video_game%29
       )? It's
a quite nice game, with interesting mechanics, and is also
PG-13, and has a quite ok storyline, in my opinion. It's also
Free-to-Play but not Pay-to-Win, so no need to shell out cash.
Another option might be D&D Online, which I think might be
somewhat close to old-school Runescape, since they technically
draw on the same inspiration (Pen and Paper D&D)

The first one is actually something I been interested myself,
based on what I heard from trusted sources like QuarterGuy and
       Omegasnake.
Though how is the D&D online, David? For as I recall, I have
played an online D&D game though it was very pay heavy to get
       anywhere remotely interesting.

I found a video that nicely sums up the main feature of Black
       desert it looks:

Deep crafting (or at least some) and combat (not pvp though,
never was into that though) that looks fun. It sounds too good
       to be true Q.Q

Note: All versions of the purchase of Black Desert have one or
more free seven day trials keys that come with them.
I am not intent on buying the game just yet... but suppose I
decided I wanted to give it a go: Is there anyone who be
interested in a free trial key?
Slight warning though: There is a separation between how the
game is available in NA/Europe and then Korean/Japan/Russia.
This would be an NA key so it likely only works for NA/Europe
because Korean/Japan/Russia the game is F2P rather than B2P but
       it is P2W unlike NA/Europe.

So THIS time I actually went to try Mabinogi and even PLAY it.
       Hilarious, is it not?
Though for some reason, to getting it, I had to be convoluted.
First, you would need to go to the Nexon official site, make
your account, download their client, and go to the game page of
said client and download it THAT way since the main page is a
tad weird. In my case, I even finished downloading yet I had to
restart in order for it to SAY it downloaded. Odd.
So there is that if any of you would want to download it.

Now you just reminded me why I have usually avoided downloading
       Nexon games.
The Nexon Client is terribly flawed. Some users have been hacked
or targeted because of it as I recall. It is, put simply, a
       security issue in of itself.
