The Death Penalty

I'm assuming everyone here knows what the death penalty is, so
I'm not going to go over that. Er, but if you don't, it's a
consequence in court if you're found guilty. Some states do
allow it, but for others it is not allowed to be carried out.
(Talking about the USA only—I don't know the situation in other
countries.)
What are your thoughts on the death penalty? Do you think that
any crime(s) is bad enough to be punishable by death? What
crime(s), if any, should be punished this way?
Just so you know, throughout this I will be referring to people
as if they weren't people. I really don't know how else to go
about it.
Personally, I do think that the death penalty should be allowed
in all states. (Again, I am only aware of the crime rates in the
USA, so I cannot speak for other countries.)
However, I do not think that earth should be delivered to any
frame person who is strongly resistant to the punishment. It
should only be carried out if it would be the most merciful
consequence. Now, for mentally unsound criminals, this would be
a difficult decision. If they are suicidal and cannot be
rehabilitated enough to function fairly normally in society, I
think it would be okay to go forward with the sentence. But what
if the person could one day return to society?
Potential and will should definitely be brought into account. If
one could potentially be released but is suicidal and purposely
fights against rehab, and their crime is bad enough to be
punishable by death if committed by anyone else, the death
penalty may be carried out. But if one willingly participates in
rehab and actively tries to get better, that guillotine
shouldn't be anywhere near them.
I know it might seem like I'm saying that any mentally unsound
criminal should be put to death, but that isn't what I believe
at all. I suppose I should define what I think of as a crime
punishable by death.
I do not think any single crime should be able to receive the
death penalty, not if that crime was sexual assault, murder or
kidnapping. Only multiple crimes should be punishable by death,
and only murder should be punishable by death. That is, serial
killings, mass murder, massacres, etc. I don't think that
anything less than murder should be punishable by death.
I thought I'd be rambling on a lot longer about this, but I
think that sums up the basics of my opinion of the death
penalty.
I only specifically addressed mentally unsound criminals, but
the same thing really goes out to other criminals. If you're
willing to work towards rejoining society, then of course you
should! If not, well, there is that other option.
But what if you don't want to rejoin society and you really
really really don't want to die either? That's a tricky
question. Actually, I don't want to answer it right now.
That's what I've got for my thoughts on the death penalty. Sorry
if I've offended anyone, and I look forward to hearing what you
think.
