February 11, 2017
I arrived home from work to discover that Blake is in WORSE
pain. He's now complaining that the pain is on both sides of his
abdomen and travels around to his back. Enough is Enough... off
to Pittsburgh we go.
We entered the ER and they had us in a treatment room and the dr
was in within 10 minutes. So far, I'm amazed! They are running
tests, have done blood work, and have given him pain medication.
They are going to review everything and consult with surgeons.
The supervising Dr. enters the room to inform us that not only
is the gall bladder, bile ducts, and liver inflamed-- add
pancreas to the mess. We are officially being admitted and
they're setting up consultations with several surgeons. A GI
specialist will see us in the morning.
February 12, 2017
They're giving Blake fluids and pain meds to keep him more
comfortable. The surgeons are consulting as a team to decide
what exactly to do. Right now they are treating the issue with
his pancreas. He has been diagnosed with pancreatitis. The GI Dr
and several surgeons were in today. The current tentative plan
is to let Blakes pancreas heal by giving him continuous IV
fluids and rest, along with a bland diet. After that, they plan
to remove his gall bladder. Again, this is the TENTATIVE plan.
The surgeons are still consulting at this point.
February 13, 2017
By 9:30 am we had a team of about 15 doctors, nurses, and
surgeons meet with us. Blake commented "When I return to school
I can let everyone know that I have a team larger than the high
school football team And my team scores more points!". It's
amazing seeing the GI team, liver specialist, surgeons, and
nurses all working together to form a treatment plan. Right now,
it's a waiting game. We have to wait for Blakes pancreatitis to
heal. His numbers are improving, which means we are making
progress. However, it can take up to a week before he has
compete relief. Once the pancreas is recovered, they will be
removing his gall bladder. That is certain. What is still
uncertain is what to do regarding his bile duct. Surgery is
extensive for a bile duct repair, and recovery is long. Bottom
line : we are going to be here for awhile. Most likely 2 weeks,
if not longer. A liver specialist is coming in today as well,
since Blake has had issues with liver functioning back when
everything first began. I have contacted work and am being
removed from the schedule until I notify them otherwise. So,
financially things will be tight. I also worry about my other
children at home!
February 15, 2017
The Drs. have decided to perform another MRI/MRE. Blakes lead
doctor was in.... They are tentatively planning to remove the
gall bladder this Friday. If all goes well, we may be able to go
home sometime next week. The tests done yesterday were showing
elevated celiac levels so there is still a chance that Blake
does have celiac disease. After discharge, we will have to
return in a few weeks for outpatient procedures to remove the
stent and to check for allergies/cholitis/celiac.
February 16, 2017
SURPRISE! We are being discharged! They don't feel that there is
a reason to remove the gall bladder at this time since it's not
producing any stones right now. We have to return in a few weeks
for scopes, after his digestive system settles down a little.
The scopes will give them better information to decide what's
going on for sure. They're now suspecting Crohn's disease.
