Dr. Srinath (Blake's GI specialist) called me this morning just
before 9 am. Last weeks lab work and ultrasound show that
Blake's Ulcerative Colitis is still not under control and he's
not responding to the current medication that he's on
(Balsalazide). Dr. Srinath is prescribing Methotrexate. Blake
will take a shot weekly and then have blood work drawn bi-weekly
to monitor his liver. Before anyone panics, YES- I am aware that
Methotrexate is a type of chemotherapy used for cancer patients.
The dose that Blake will be taking is much lower. It is being
used as an anti-inflammatory. Hopefully this drug will allow
Blake to enter remission. If so, then hopefully he will be able
to stop the injections and take the drug orally instead.
