1.5 "Redstone Update"
By: yqt1001 Date: January 4, 2013, 1:23 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
We should get a thread up for changes that will be necessary
server wide.
Only the first snapshot is out and most redstone contraptions
will still work, however a lot of changes can be made to improve
the designs of some of them. (mostly replacing the old BUD
daylight detectors with actual daylight detectors)
Nether quartz is a big change though. It's a new nether ore that
is pretty common in newly generated chunks, that is the problem
though. Do we crop the nether like the overworld or do we just
make people walk out pretty far to new chunks? Another very
Blacraft problem, would this ore be an ore to store in
collective storages?

There may also be some changes in torch strength (in the
snapshot), but I'm not sure if that's because of a bug or
something.

It seemed to be about as common as iron (or maybe somewhere
between iron and coal in abundance) and it appears in large
clusters like coal does. With a fortune 3 pick, I got 26 or so
out of a cluster of 8 or 10, which is pretty good.
For the cropping the nether, I'd be all for cropping it. Without
a map of the nether, it's hard to know for sure whether a chunk
is newly generated unless we go like 500+ blocks from spawntown
portal.
As far as the rail system goes, it's going to be a major project
to 'industrialize' our rail systems and our mines. The main
passenger rail system will be the priority though.
Also, there are these new redstone blocks which can act as an
alternative to redstone torches, but mainly it'll double as
compact storage. We all know how much redstone public storage
has and heck, I've got a large chest full of it myself.

The rail changes are unknown right now so I don't feel like
planning for it right now is much of a priority. :P

about the ore: which storage it is left in should be up to the
members of the UBSR as it is with all other materials.
about the nether: map before cropping at all
redstone: good.
rail system: if high speed rails are a thing i would find it
wasteful to spend it on tens of kilometers of aboveground track
when it could have its speed increased 8-fold and use 8 times
less material in the nether, so i think we should develop a
netherrail in anycase (although for now, netherwalking is fine
because 5.6km/s isn't much slower than 8 km/s

Yeah, I know they're unknown, but the passenger rails are likely
the first thing we'd want to re-engineer (outside of our own
local minecart systems.
The spawntown cargo rail system at the depots though is going to
have to be completely uprooted and redesigned.

I agree with mapping since without a map, we don't know where to
crop.
As for the rails, lets just see what else is released for the
rail system revamp, it's too early to really make any decisions
about it.

Netherrail will have to wait until 1.5 is out (to see the full
changes of the update), and then once it is out I'll create a
thread for it (pending Bla's approval).
Also I'll do some mapping today I guess.

Fyi mapping the nether is hard as there is netherrack at sky
level, so you might have to change the settings.
Anyways, crytelline caves will be epic!

Crystalline caves, wait, where did you get that idea? You mean
the quartz? It doesn't look all that awesome in-game, but can be
fixed by a texture pack.

Bla went to bed like 2 minutes before I got this question.
As far as mapping the nether goes, we have 2 options, have
netherrack, bedrock and flowing&still lava not shown. Or just
render the 50-75 y coordinates which encompasses a decent
percentage of what has actually been built in the nether. Which
is preferred?
Without bedrock, netherrack and lava:

Layers 50-75 (maybe change them a bit?)

They are both centered on the blaze farm nether fortress.
