Well I am a bit of an optimist. Not the "everything is lovely
and perfect" kind of optimist, but the kind that believes that
we must act to change things for the better, and that there is
some point to doing that. Laws are for changing, as are systems
and cultures. Countries, including the UK on some of these, not
all, have managed to change to proportional representation,
move against monarchies, move against dictatorships, move
towards universal franchise, etc.
The US doesn't have representative government any more than the
UK, imo.

Therein lies the difference between us... I happen to like
traditions, monarchies and respecting the law of the land. Not
everything needs changing.

That's ok. I don't know that we're necessarily that far apart.
It's only a question of defining what should go, what should
stay, what should be modified, and what should be done new. Such
change is the way of the world, thankfully, or we would still be
throwing people into water to discover if they are guilty or
innocent of crimes.
I like some traditions, I care progressively less for our
monarchy and its role in our culture, although I do respect the
Queen for adherence to her sense of duty, and I think law is
crucial. The trick is getting the right laws, since they are
only written by people, after all, and people tend to do what
best suits their own interests.

It seems the more the stories start leaking the less surprised
the public seem to be about it all. It's kind of like " oh well
it's what we expected" and now they seem accepting in a
lethargic kind of way.
Sad really. It's getting to be like Trump syndrome. Another day
another crazy story.

Hence the need for political reform in the UK.
Edit: sorry, I meant in England, I'm not up to speed on how
things work in the devolved structures.

Sad and more than a little annoying. People contributing to
their own effective disenfranchisement.

Some of the constituency boundaries in Wales are likely to be
redrawn next year, which means 8 fewer MPs (32 insteadof 40)
representing Wales in Westminster in future Parliaments. And

I stayed up a bit too late tonight, wanting to watch the re-run
of BBC's Nick Robinson's discussion with Steve Baker.
Baker looks (almost unbelievably more than ever) like he has
close connections to Scunthorpe.
