I've never really liked the use of the word Tory/Tories. It's as
if the word itself implies comtempt.
And then I read stuff like Nadine Dorries attacking the BBC with
her accusations of jobs "because mum and dad worked there" when
she used public money to employ her own daughters or today,
reading about Liz Truss

She said “Every public sector worker should feel personal
responsibility for the money they spend and the money they

But she travelled by private jet at a cost of half a million ££
- and a regular flight would have got her there earlier.
Add that all up with Johnson's denials of parties and all the
rest of it and maybe using a word to show contempt for these
people is actually fair enough.

I get what you're saying about the name. Perhaps I should
express my contempt more overtly and in differently ways. While
I am not one, I do have friends/colleagues who are conservative,
and they are equally unwilling to call this lot conservative,
because conservative doesn't have to mean reactionary, corrupt,
bigoted and small-minded.
Maybe we need a new term.

I think my (previous) dislike of it comes from my LPYS days.
While Kick out the Tories and Smash the Tories might have been
great rallying cries for like minded people they probably didn't
do much to attract the support of people who really should have
been in favour of properly funding NHS, welfare, dignity in
retirement and so on and maybe a lot of that potential support
was frightened off. I always felt that it's full use was really
Tory Scum.
My parents were Conservative, a brother or two too. Like your
friends I like to think my parents wouldn't have approved of
this lot's behaviour.
Perhaps there was something useful about Thatcher with those she
described as Wet. :D
A new term? There is one word that seems appropriate.

Because the rules (or standards) apply to us and not them.
"they" make the distinction.

everyone on BE who has so much more knowledge than all of them
... LOL!

I see nothing wrong with calling them Tories...... in general,
they have never been on the side of the man in the street,
always on the side of the elite - so "Robber" seems a polite
enough term for them, because at the least they rob people of
their opportunities. Tories actually use the term themselves,
although I often wonder if they actually know its meaning (In
fact, the Tories came about due to recognition of the future
James II as heir to the throne and predates the term
"Conservatives by a century or so).
However, there was a strrain of Tory who believed, in a slightly
paternalistic way, in supporting progress and a kind of equality
of opportunity. These seem to have been excised from the Party,
leaving those who veer closer to the right. There is still a
spread of views, but less so than in the past. On the other
hand, we have seen the growth on the right of the anachronistic
elitists..... and there is something strange in the British
psyche that makes them accept pomposity and arrogance.Johnson
fits the new party, but he should - he shaped it around him!
