Unemployment rate rises to 7.0%, highest since 2016: Statistics
       Canada.
  HTML https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/250606/dq250606a-eng.htm?utm_source=rddt&utm_medium=smo&utm_campaign=statcan-statcan-lfs-epa&utm_content=canada
The unemployment rate rose 0.1% in May, the employment rate was
       steady at 60%.
-employment among core-aged (25 to 54 years old) women increased
       by 42,000 (+0.6%)
-employment among core-aged men it fell by 31,000 (-0.4%).
(I will say from our anecdotal experience L gets job interviews
no issue and has a few offers this month but none were better
than her current employment, but it's pretty crazy how she can
apply to 2-3 places get 1-2 interviews and a job offer, I can
apply to 500 places and get 0 interviews when we use the exact
       same resume format.)
-Employment fell in public administration (-32,000; -2.5%),
accommodation and food services (-16,000; -1.4%), transportation
and warehousing (-16,000; -1.4%) and business, building and
       other support services (-15,000; -2.1%).
-Employment grew in wholesale and retail trade (+43,000; +1.5%),
information, culture and recreation (+19,000; +2.3%), finance,
insurance, real estate, rental and leasing (+12,000; +0.8%) and
       utilities (+4,900; +3.1%).
-Employment increased in British Columbia (+13,000; +0.4%), Nova
       Scotia (+11,000; +2.1%), and New Brunswick (+7,600; +1.9%)
-Employment declined in Quebec (-17,000; -0.4%), Manitoba
       (-5,800; -0.8%), and Prince Edward Island (-2,700; -2.9%).
There was little change in the other provinces.
Overall, there has been virtually no employment growth since
       January.
-There were 1.6 million unemployed people in May, an increase of
       13.8% (+191,000) from 12 months earlier.
Not a good time to be a young person and needing a summer job.
-the unemployment rate among returning students aged 15 to 24
was 20.1% (Have to go back to 2009 and 1999 to get to comparable
       rates in this category.)
For young men, the unemployment rate among returning students
       was 22.1%.
For comparison the Eurozone unemployment is at record lows.

       />US unemployment is around 4.2%.
The amount of people in Canada that have been without a job for
over a year has now hit a level not seen since the 1990 from
this chart that was posted on reddit.

       I hear you.
My 42 year old son has been without employment for over 4
years.. not through lack of trying. Too much competition, not
       enough jobs.

I have basically given up on ever finding a job, it's just
futile at this point, like years of applying and nothing so why
       even try? ya know.

The government really should focus on retraining people at no
cost and eliminate the red tape to funding, let people apply for
training and if accepted the government should cover the full
cost, too often the barrier to retraining is the cost and
inability of someone to take on debt related to student loans,
so much the government could do to get people into suitable
       jobs.
Right now there is a labour skills mismatch, too many of the
jobs we do have in Canada don't match the skills of the
       unemployed.
One example is all the unfilled healthcare jobs in BC, just
about all healthcare jobs are short staffed with dozens upon
dozens of job listings, there simply aren't enough people with
the skills needed, train unemployed for these jobs, win win for
       everyone.
