BC Hydro scrambles to tranquilize and remove bears hibernating
in Site C dam flood zone

BC Hydro is scrambling to move hibernating bears out of the Site
C dam flood zone so they don’t drown in their dens when
reservoir filling for the contentious hydro project begins as
early as this month. The bears will be tranquilized and
relocated to artificial dens made of plywood and straw bales,
according to a document obtained by The Narwhal.

This dam project has been controversial since it was first
announced years ago. Some facts about the dam.
Cost $16 billion.
Will create a 9,330-hectare reservoir.
" The dam, which will flood 128 kilometres of the Peace River
and its tributaries, will destroy some of Canada’s premier
farmland, habitat for more than 100 species at risk of
extinction, and Indigenous hunting, trapping and fishing
grounds. "
I will assume they probably cannot locate every bear and that
some bears will end up dead this winter from the filling of the
reservoir.

128km is a lot of river, especially one that big. I wonder what
made them decide to flood it this time of year instead of in the
spring when the runoff would help? Despite all the other
species at risk and the hunting and fishing that will be
affected, the bears will probably attract the most sympathy, and
the results from other places that have tried artificial dens
aren't spectacular. I think if they'd started darting and
collaring bears in the spring they'd have a better chance of
finding most of them, but it sounds like they want to do it as
the water pushes them out so they're easier to spot from the
air. I'm guessing they've looked at how other places handle
bears and come up with this plan as most expedient, but if the
best results are 5 out of 8 using the artificial dens, even the
ones they manage to relocate are going to have trouble.

It's been a super controversial dam project since the day it was
announced due to the environmental destruction and other
concerns, it's also been a big of a problem project costing more
than it was supposed to, the previous BC Liberal government
started it, when NDP took over they looked into stopping the
project but so much money had been sunk into it, the NDP decided
to finish it.
