United Auto Workers strike in US
DIR By: jsmth321

---------------------------------------------------------
Looks like the United Auto Workers strike will begin at 12am
Eastern time or in about 90 minutes as I post this if no deal is
struck by then. The 2 sides appear far apart,
" The United Auto Workers will go on strike at midnight at all
three major Detroit automakers at once for the first time in its
history, union president Shawn Fain said Thursday night."
The union plans to begin with a stand up strike rather than
have all 150,000 workers walk off at once

This has been a record year for strikes across the US and this
UAW strike will be one of the biggest as it doesn't appear a
deal with be agreed upon by midnight eastern.
The actors and writer strike continues as well, which is why
most network TV shows will not premier this fall and some may
get cancelled at this point.
American Airlines flight attendants have voted to strike
although a strike isn't like anytime soon.

No agreement strike has begun.
"United Auto Workers members who walked off the job at three
plants as part of a targeted strike will picket throughout the
day. The UAW said it will not negotiate with the automakers
Friday, dashing any expectations of a quick resolution."
Ford CEO Jim Farley say the company can't afford the union
demands and would go bankrupt.
Some of the union demands are 40% pay increase over 4 years and
a 32 hour work week.
Ford offered 20% raise over 4 years with 10% right away.
The automakers may shut down operations and lay off non-striking
workers.
A 10 day strike against the automakers is expected to cost the
US economy $5 billion dollars.
Current top wage is $32.32 per hour.
I could see this strike getting ugly and prolonged.

Talk with the big 3 and the union will resume Saturday.

“Auto companies have seen record profits, including in the last
few years, because of the extraordinary skill and sacrifices of
UAW workers,” Biden said. “But those record profits have not
been shared fairly, in my view, with those workers.”

They are striking over $32.32 an hour plus 10% now .. putting
them on $35.52 an hour... plus overtime and shift allowance..
ludicrous.

I wonder what the starting and median wage is? That doesn't
seem that high for the top wage. I remember when my former
brother in law was working night shift at the Ford plant in
Oakville in '72 and he looked terrible when he got home in the
morning. It payed enough for the mortgage on a house in
Mississauga and 1 car (they got employee pricing). Some
tradesmen regularly get that sort of money or more (much more),
especially when they work at camps or out of town jobs where
they are paid a subsidy. Boiler makers and pipe fitters are
rich! One political advantage the auto workers have in southern
Ontario is the degree to which they drive the economy. All
those auto workers making $25 or $30 per hour (and let's face
it, that doesn't buy what it used to) are spending that money in
the community and paying taxes to the province and the feds, and
providing employment to the service industry. Trickle-down
economics, isn't it? I had friends who cared about money far
more than I did go to work in the steel mill here, but there's
no way I would. Niece's husband in Brampton was assembling
motor homes or something on night shift and I didn't envy him
either. The only assembly line job I ever applied for was
making Nortel phones back in the dark ages, and I didn't get it.

Ford and the UAW in the US have reached a tentative agreement to
end the strike.
HTML http://United Auto Workers union and Ford reach tentative labor
agreement
"A bruising 41-day strike at Ford is near an end as the United
Auto Workers and its largest employer have reached a tentative
deal to return 16,600 strikers to the job within days."
"The deal would give UAW members an immediate 11% pay increase
and pay increases starting at 25% over the next four-and-a-half
years, until the tentative contract is set to expire in early
2028"
Cost-of-living adjustments will also return, workers lost this
during the 2008 recession.
The strike continues at General Motors and Stellantis.
