Having to wait that long is ludicrous.

Another Vancouver Island hospital will have it's ER closed
overnight, in addition to Port Hardy losing 24 hour ER, Alert
Bay will also see their ER close from 7pm to 8am.
Health Minister Adrian Dix saying they will eventually get back
to being open 24 hours, but it will not happen in weeks and will
take longer, the province really struggles to attract and retain
healthcare workers in smaller communities.

My GP in Victoria actually closed his practice in Alert Bay to
relocate to Victoria last fall.

British Columbians had to wait an average of 79 minutes before
they could see a doctor at a walk-in clinic in 2022, the
national average was 37 minutes making BC one of the longest
wait times to see a doctor in the country.
North Vancouver and Victoria have the worst wait times, with
North Vancouver the average walk in wait is two hours and 40
minutes to see the doctor and Victoria is the end worst at an
average of two hours and 17 minutes.
According to medi-map but not all walk in clinics participate in
that platform.

This of course only counts those who were lucky enough to get
onto the wait list for the day before the clinic hit it's daily
quota, Walk-in clinics can in some areas hit their daily quota
within 1-2 hours of opening, and close the wait list for the
day.
Not unusual to have 20-30 people waiting 1-2 hours before a
clinic opens so they get on the list first.
We also have lost a fair amount of walk in clinics since 2020,
doctors moving on, retiring and just not doing the walk in model
anymore which has made accessing medical care even more time
consuming and difficult.

Resignations and retaliation: B.C. health-care workers see
increasingly 'toxic' workplaces

"There are more signs that tensions are high in British
Columbia’s health authorities as an outspoken doctor on
Vancouver Island has faced professional repercussions and nearly
all the critical care doctors at a northern hospital have
resigned."
This doctor has be outspoken on the problem, and today Island
Health revoked his hospital privileges in a town with almost no
doctors left.
"Dr. Alex Nataros, who practices family medicine while working
as a hospitalist and emergency care physician, has had his
emergency privileges suspended by the Vancouver Island Health
Authority."
Not much better up in the northern part of BC.
"the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Northern
BC is being staffed mostly by temporary physicians after seven
of the eight intensivists on staff there resigned."

The GI referral is at a stand off with the GP and specialists
office, the specialist office says no need for a specialist
consult. GP disagrees, so she is going to refer to a GI clinic
on the island now that we live here as it's pretty clear the GI
doctors in Vancouver have no intention of seeing me.

It's terrible that they have kept you waiting all this time and
then refuse to see you.. glad the GP is referring you to the
clinic instead... hope you get an early appointment..

Healthcare in BC is in dire straights, we have a shortage of
oncologists too which has led to longer and longer wait times
for people with cancer waiting for treatment with some people
dying before their first oncologist appointment.
We have the worst wait times in Canada for seeing an Oncologist,
only 20% of patients in BC will see one within 2 weeks, vs 75%
in Ontario.
For patients getting radiation treatment 88% of patients will
start treatment within 4 weeks, the worst performing in the
country, Ontario 98% of patients will get radiation within 4
weeks, and in MB it's 100%.

BC has see a fair number of Oncologists quit, the article from
2022 said 18 since 2020, which is not a small number, and not
exactly easy to hire and replace 1 Oncologist let alone 18 of
them.

The ambulance shortage is not good in BC, especially in smaller
communities, a town up north had no paramedic coverage due to
the towns only paramedic crew being ill, the nearest ambulance
was nearly 150km away, man died.

Taking a long time to have my ultra sound results read, my
online health record still says pending, been almost a week now,
in Vancouver imaging usually took like 2 maybe 3 days,
everything is slower on an island I guess.
