B.C. government is reactivating 20 emergency operations centres
as hospitalizations are expected to increase.

As of Thursday there were 10,226 patients in acute hospital beds
with approx 11,680 available which includes 2,500 surge beds.

BC government will waive the the up-front application and
assessment fees for internationally trained nurses which will
save applicants $3,700.
The province will also make available financial support for
eligible travel expenses for nurses taking assessments in order
to re-enter the workforce.
Nurses returning to practice will also be eligible for up to
$10,000 in bursaries for any additional education required to
return to practice.
BC started a marketing campaign and navigational support to new
and incoming internationally educated nurses last April, over
5,500 people expressed interest in working in BC with 2,000
people actively working through the various stages of the
registration and assessment process.

Hopefully these new initiatives will help boost nursing staff in
BC.

BC did the same 'international recruitment' for nurses and
police officers a few years ago..

In 1974 all the younger psychiatric nurses at Regina General
received mail with job information about a hospital in Milwaukee
offering better wages, incentives, and a glossy folder showing
what a nice community it was. None of them moved, but several
were thinking about it. Makes me think this sort of sniping or
poaching has been going on for quite a while. What we've done
in the past in Saskatchewan is offer subsidies for medical
education with the condition that graduates have to work in the
province for x number of years before taking their expensive
skills elsewhere. Lots of them don't want to be stuck in a
small town hospital where they aren't going to make nearly as
much as in a big place.

Looks like the only walk in clinic in town is trying to find
another doctor to add to their staff.

BC parents of a young child have been waiting 18 months for a
diagnostic test for their child, there is apparently nobody in
BC able to do the test.
"But the mystery remains far from solved. Noel’s doctors at BC
Children’s Hospital still don’t know the nature or proper
treatment of his condition because there is no one to perform
the necessary diagnostic test."
The staffing issues are getting bad and people are dying because
of it.
Cancer treatment appointments are taking so long that people
have been dying before they can even start treatment.
BC health authorities have denied the parents request to go out
of province to Alberta, Ontario or Washington state.
The sole tech who can perform the test on children got ill in
the pandemic and never returned to work, and while the job has
been posted multiple times to hire someone, there appears to be
no qualified person available or willing to work in Vancouver.

Pretty sad all around how bad healthcare is getting in this
province.
I am pushing 18-20 months now waiting for a GI specialist, still
no appointment.

Nurses in BC are upset about 15% increase in the fees they have
to pay each year in order to work.
The average nurse in BC will have to pay $700 this year.

Port Hardy, BC on Vancouver Island will be down to just 1
emergency department doctor as of July 1st and 3 doctors leave
town.
The ER there already closes overnight on a semi-regular basis
due to staff shortages.

Port Hardy is the largest community on the North Island, between
July 2022 to Jan. 2023 the ER has been closed 25% of the time.
When the Port Hardy ER is closed, patients have to travel 42km
to Port McNeil with much of those 42km having no cell phone
coverage.
The doctor in town and community leaders are urging the province
to allow physician assistants to work in BC, other provinces
have physician assistants as do some US states but BC currently
does not allow physician assistants.

Very clearly don't have enough GI doctors in this province,
called today to inquire about my referral from 2021, still
pending and no appointment yet.
My referral is for first available doctor there just doesn't
seem to be enough doctors to go around so people like me end up
waiting years. (there are like 10-12 GI doctors all working out
of the office.)
