Monkey Pox

First case of monkey pox has been reported in Alberta.
HTML https://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/alberta-confirms-first-case-of-monkeypox-1.5930248?c
Quebec saw their case count double in a week to 52.
HTML https://globalnews.ca/news/8886659/quebec-monkeypox-cases-june-1-2022/
World wide up to 550 cases.
HTML https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/01/who-says-monkeypox-has-been-spreading-undetected-as-global-cases-rise-to-more-than-550.html
WHO saying it has likely been spreading undetected for quite
some time.
WHO has no idea how long it has been spreading outside Africa or
when it started.
WHO doesn't know if it is too late to contain.
"We dont really know whether its too late to contain. "
No deaths reported yet but the spread hasn't been detected in
vulnerable populations yet such as pregnant women and children.
Due to small pox being eradicated and vaccines being stopped for
small pox decades ago, monkey pox cases in Africa have been
growing over the recent years as more and more people were not
small pox vaccinated, US and Canada stopped routine vaccination
around 1972, so most people born in the US/Canada that are 50 or
younger have never been vaccinated for small pox.

There was an outbreak of monkeypox in the US almost 20 years ago
- no deaths..

represented a large outbreak. The peak in the onset of illness
occurred between May 29 and June 9, 2003, and no further cases
of illness have been reported in humans since June 22, 2003.

It's been around for many years in Africa.. nobody seemed to be
concerned until it 'broke out' in the rest of the world.
I thought this article was interesting..

The highly contagious virus kills up to 30% of the people
infected. By comparison, the version of monkeypox in this
outbreak kills less than 1% of people infected.

I was vaccinated against smallpox back in the late 70's when I
moved to Hong Kong..
I expect Cowpox will be the next poxy disease that comes around

World Health Organization will convene an emergency committee
next week to assess whether the monkeypox outbreak represents a
public health emergency of international concern.
That is the highest level warning WHO issues, currently only
COVID & Polio have the warning.
The concern is the the virus is behaving unusually in it's
spread.

Canada is up to 112 cases as of June 9 with an update expected
this week.
Toronto is the most recent jurisdiction in Canada to begin
targetted vaccination, Sunday's clinic was for employees of the
city's bath houses.

How bizarre!

are they
likening it to HIV or AIDS - most likely to be transmitted only
by 'transgender people or who self-identify as belonging to the
gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men community' but
nobody else?

WHO has declared monkey pox a global emergency.
Bavarian Nordic of Denmark is the worlds sole producer of
vaccine.
The bottom line is we've seen a shift in the epidemiology of
monkeypox where there's now widespread, unexpected
transmission, said Dr. Albert Ko, a professor of public health
and epidemiology at Yale University.

I think this is the important bit - that the consensus is that
it's unlikely to affect the majority of people... unless they
are males who are sexually active with other males..

BC is opening monkey pox vaccine to anyone, although the booking
sites have not yet been updated.

Cases remain low but they are seeing some community
transmission.

Specific groups of at risk people, rather than 'anyone'. The
risk to the majority of people is low..
