You really don't understand..... the whole problem is that the
killer was a transvestite, nothing to do with the gun, according
to Congressman Pete Sessions.
..... because as is well known, guns don't kill and they're
necessary to protect yourself from, um, people with
guns.

When you read what an idiotic cluster f..k the whole situation
was....you could weep to think of how many, if not al, of those
children would still be alive. Some heads are going, one
thinks.

This really is an unfotunate addition to the sad affair. Gov
Abbott is livid and the media are all over it. So now the focus
has, to the benefit of the pro-lawless gun brigade, shifted to
law enforcement. Talk about the perfect strawman...

I have to question why the US appears to believe that any 18
year old 'needs' to purchase AR-15's - or anyone else for that
matter. Yes, they may have the 'right to bear arms' but that
was enacted when the 1 shot musket was the one available. Why
are teenagers who can't drink legally allowed to purchase lethal
weapons without any training or assessment?
Sick to my stomach thinking of those poor 8-10 year old children
who must have been petrified, being told they were going to die
and then being shot one by one.

With about 20 million AR type rifles in the US (forgive
imprecise statistics, but the sources I looked at say that
includes law enforcement, and I'm not sure if that includes the
AK-47 and derivatives, H&K, etc) and a million more being sold
each year, one thing the gun lobby has right is that taking them
away would not only be a constitutional issue, but logistically
challenging if not impossible. The Canadian solution was to
stop sales, require owners to register them as restricted
weapons (like pistols), and pin the magazines to 5 rounds.
When they became available in the 1970's I wanted to buy a Ruger
Mini-14 but didn't because the .223 isn't legal for deer here
(.23 calibre and larger only). As it happened, that was the
weapon used in the Ecole' Polytechnic massacre that prompted
that legislation.

What is sad and shameful is that NOBODY seems to understand that
the whole issue is driven by the NRA and the manufacturers and
vendors, backed by those who simply can't see any other point of
view. In the UK, personal ownership of fireams is discouraged
and licensing is difficult. However, people don't sit around
complaining about not being allowed to carry guns. Even during
the NI troubles, people didn't think to "protect" themselves
with firearms..... and the fact is, the number of deaths by
firearm is negligible by US standards. There is no right to buy,
no right to carry - and anyone without a specific license is
acting illegally.
Those who carry guns illegally in the UK know that, if caught,
they will face a long term in prison, regardless. This means
that, in general, the police are unarmed and therefore there are
far fewer examples of excessive police actions. It also means
that a burglar is unlikely to be armed, so less "home invasions"
and all the other gun-related crime and violence that the US
enjoys. However, say this and there will be many who declare
that "The USA is different" and that you can't compare things.
Well yes, the USA IS different.... because the number of deaths
due to gunshot is horrendous. Better to see a few dozen dead
kids than change an archaic law though, eh?
