To which I add, in response to the bit I bolded, but it won't.

You're right, it won't. Hard brexiteers will twist the situation
to "prove" how right Brexit was, and some are already
complaining about taking in refugees - "after all we voted for
Brexit to stop (European) immigration."

I've seen comments locally from people I know voted for Brexit
who say we should accept some Ukrainian refugees, yet who are
dead set against taking refugees from countries such as Syria,
Palestine and Libya. Apparently, it has nothing to do with skin
colour, but 'because they look like us'!
Methinks those people are delusional.

Just wait until the Ukrainians start coming across in rubber
boats!
There are SERIOUS questions to be asked about the support for
Ukrainians as opposed to that for Syrians or any other less
"northern European" types. Not that I think the help for Ukraine
should be less, but people need to look at themselves in the
mirror. The good old Brexit government though, they see the
similarity.... like everyone over there, they're all
"foreigners" who must be checked to ensure they won't be a
security risk or a drain on the economy.... though Ukrainians
will be allowed to work, because a Ukrainian dustman is of more
value then a Syrian Surgeon, presumably.....

Surely you mean a dustperson, possibly a dustboy or even
dustOAP...
