The comment is good, the result...... I'm not so sure (I'll be
interested to hear Eric's views).
On the one hand, it's good to see that the usual swings and
roundabouts of Portuguese elections has not worked in favour of
the right, but on the other hand, I'm not fantastically
comfortable with any party in a multi-party democracy having an
absolute majority - particularly in a unicameral system.
The PSD "Socialists" have won 117 of the 226 in the Assembleia
Nacional, so they have a small, but absolute, majority of 1.
However, they are "palest pink" rather than "deepest red" - and
their majority comes at the expense of other left-wing parties
and with a rise to the right.
The results (on a 58% vote) are:
PS ("socialists", centre left) 117 seats (+11)
PPD/PSD (social democratic alliance, centre right) 71 seats (-6)
Chega! (far right) 12 seats (+11)
IL (Liberal initiative, centre right) 8 seats (+7)
Bloco Esquerda (Left Bloc, left wing) 5 seats (-14)
CDU (Communist/Greens, left wing) 6 seats (-6)
PAN (Animals/Nature, syncretic) 1 seat (-3)
Livre (eco-socialist, left wing) 1 seat (-)
Madeira regional (centre right) 3 seats (+3)
Azores regional (centre right) 2 seats (+2)
CDS-PP (right wing) lost all 5 seats
(the Bold red is obvious - a worrying increase in the far-right
vote, the Bold are decreases in former Socialist supporting
leftish parties)
On my count, that still gives a breakdown 130 leftish to 95
rightish and one centrist, but far more fragmented and with
large gains by the far right (Chega!) and centre right (IL).
There's been a shifiting of seats, a bit of personality politics
and some regionality. Hardly conclusive.....
That's multi-party PR politics for you..... not perfect, but a
refreshing change to Westminster!!

It was always presented as the knock on PR that it would let in
unpleasant fringe parties that otherwise could never hope to
gain a seat in the UK. But what has actually happened is that
the right no longer needs to have seats in Parliament to control
the agenda - they do it from the outside, and the parties inside
just cave. So if there was ever any benefit there, it has been
lost.

I absolutely disagree with the likes of UKIP, Farage and others
like them, but I will also support their right to seats in
Parliament if the win elections. Though personally, I'dprefer
it if every single one of them to lose their deposit instead....

Surely this will never become a law? (I may be giving up on
assuming stupid sh!t wont happen) Oklahoma proposed law.
“Students’ Religious Belief Protection Act”.
It will make anything that contradicts any students religious
belief, liable to a $10,000 fine, for each instance, and each
student. So teaching the Big Bang in 5 classes of 30 students
would leave the teacher liable to pay one and a half million
dollars. For one days work.

I was reading something about that on Twitter.
I hope any decent teacher in Oklahoma chooses to move to another
state that isn't controlled by Republican religious zealots....

But, but, they'd have to be careful not to drop odd the edge of
the world! You speak as if people in Oklahoma are
dinosaurs...... you know, created by God only 6,000 years ago!
I do recall meeting a guy from Oklahoma when I first moved to
London, he was just back from a trip to "Paris, France"
(presumably because "Paris, Texas" was too far away....) where
he had been forced to pay for destroying a towel in his hotel
room "because they didn't supply a wash-rag" and complained
bitterly about the French speaking the way they do, "because
y'all know they're spreaking English behind your back!" Given
his habit of describing most female colleagues as "soiled
doves", I decided that Oklahoma was maybe a place best
avoided...........

Found with her Mother hiding in plain sight at her husband's
fathers house (both the father and the grandfather were
arrested), parents removed her from her 'legal guardian'.
"Found alive" is overly dramatical..
I do wonder why she was removed from her parents custody but
allowed to have contact with them.. no explanations have been
given yet.
Sad story (I read it elsewhere - not in the Guardian).
