But, of course, it benefits the huge armaments industry to
exaggerate Russia's potential. I recall the "foxbat", Russia's
super-fighter, swift and powerful. When one was eventually
examined, it achieved this by having a huge bomber engine
installed..... but that meant it's range and fighting ceiling
were severely compromised. Then there are the Russian attack
helicopters that have no working navigation systems and use
commercial sat-navs. Whereas the US overspends to produce "the
best of the best", which work only in ideal conditions, Russia
produces the "just about good enough" in huge quantities because
they are significantly cheaper. Just look at the military
budgets of the USA and Russia and it tells its own story.
The story of the NASA space-pen and the Russian pencil may be a
myth, but it undelines the difference between THe US and Russia
in one aspect - before the pressurised space pen, both sides
used the same technology...... but NASA managed to find a way to
pay over $120 for a pencil!

It's like the movie IndependenceDay, where the President asks
where the money for Area51 comes from...
President Thomas Whitmore:
I don't understand, where does all this come from? How do you
get funding for something like this?
Julius Levinson:
You don't actually think they spend $20,000.00 on a hammer,
$30,000.00 on a toilet seat do you?
So Russia is going to require natural gas buyers to use rubles
and wont accept USD$ or Euro.
President Vladimir Putin signed a decree Thursday that requires
buyers of natural gas from "unfriendly countries" to hold
accounts at Gazprombank — Russia's third-largest bank — and
settle contracts in rubles. It takes effect on Friday.
Wonder how this will effect Germany, apparently the largest
buyer of natural gas in Europe.

Badly, I should think.
An obvious (& from his perspective) logical move by Putin, shame
those clever politicians couldn't see that coming.

Maybe they did, but don't care. Germany and France claim
they're ready to stop getting gas from Russia now if Putin wants
to default. The existing contracts are for payment in Euros,
and Putin doesn't want to lose those sales so he's hoping
they'll agree to pay Gazprombank in Euros and let them convert
it. If the gas gets cut off there are 6 months of good weather
during which to get infrastructure ready to receive it from
elsewhere. The threat would have worked better at the onset of
winter.
"Putin spoke by phone with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and
French President Emmanel Macron on Wednesday, and outlined a
system whereby both countries would continue to pay in euros,
which would then be converted to rubles by Russia’s Gazprombank
– which has not been sanctioned by the EU – upon receipt.
“Scholz did not agree to this procedure in the conversation, but
asked for written information to better understand the
procedure,” a German official said, while a French official
said, “France is against paying in rubles.”

It gets even worse....MSNBC has been showing videos of the
civilian bodies in the streets of Bucha as well mass graves
filled with bodies of civilians, including children, of those
indiscriminately murdered by retreating Russian troops. They are
brutalizing the civilian population. Some of the victims were
shot in the back of the head, hands bound behind their backs.
There seems to be no end to the list of war crimes they have
committed. I for one would wish that they track down the
soldiers responsible and execute them on the spot. At this
point, no mercy for those who were merciless towards civilians,
including women and children.

"Let our actions distinguish us from our enemies as much as our
cause." Can't remember who said it, but there's no point in
Ukrainians leaving themselves open to any action from the
international community when they're going to be charging
Russians with war crimes. Give them the weapons they ask for
and more; give them modern air defence and anti-ship capability,
give them the tools they need to kill every Russian they can in
battle but if they're caught abusing or torturing prisoners
Russia gets great propaganda fodder. Bucha wasn't a one-off
event and the Russians came into this prepared to deal with
evidence and witnesses.
"Russian mobile crematoria in partially occupied Mariupol,
Donetsk region, are burning the bodies of murdered and killed
city residents."
