CNN's Christiane Amanpour interviewed Vladimir Putin’s chief
spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked several times to rule out use
of nuclear weapons he refused to do so, when asked about the
conditions in which Putin would resort to nuclear weapons as an
option, the answer was “if it is an existential threat for our
country, then it can be.”
When asked what Putin thinks has been acheived in Ukraine:
“Well, first of all, not yet. He hasn’t achieved yet.” but still
claimed the special operation was “going on strictly in
accordance with the plans and the purposes that were established
before hand.”
“main goals of the operation” are to “get rid of the military
potential of Ukraine,” to ensure Ukraine is a “neutral country,”
to get rid of “nationalist battalions.”

Peskov probably has more to lose than most of the oligarchs; his
name popped up in the Panama Papers and he was quick to discount
the Pandora Papers info on inner circle members. Despite the
rah-rah about Russian nationalism they still have to preserve
the interests of the Putin crime family. Paranoia must be
intense.

I didn't know that, only associated Poroshenko with accusations
of presidential corruption. The form seems similar to Russian
senior investors spread among politicians and security men.
Peskov's personal stake isn't necessarily even all dirty money
since he married a wealthy figure skater worth quite a few
million on her own, but I've always suspected him of being an
investor for his buddies.

You're not wrong, and your point is appropriate.
Unfortunately there is some commonality in the acquisition of
wealth (for want of a better term!) in both (all?) of the former
Soviet territories.
Former Ukraine president Poroshenko is another one! Delete that,
you've already said so!
It's a rotten old world!

Poroshenko got out on bail and picked up a gun and went to war
though, and while that may not aquit him when he does go to
court (should he survive) it will probably work in his favour.
I just changed a few bulbs in the bar to get some Ukrainian
colours up.

It's almost like Russia is trying to antagonize the US and NATO
"Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday took aim at
the sanctions the United States and other countries have imposed
on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, saying he believes that
the West has declared "total war" on Russia."

Russia IS trying to provoke an escalation, so they can use that
as an excuse as to why they need Ukraine to stay out of NATO. A
self-fulfilling prophesy.
